The advertising industry in Lebanon is a very tight industry nearly monopolized by the Choueiry group. Advertising industry monopolized means billions of dollars ending up in one pocket, at the service of one medium.
I work in the advertising field and I can say that OTV, according to the statistics provided by Stat-Ipsos is now competing on #2 position in the TV industry.
Watching OTV every day, made me notice that the ads run on OTV v/s the ads run on other media that rates lower, are minimal.
Add to this that many brands only put ads on specific channels and boycott in a way or the other OTV. The reason of this boycot can be political and/or related to the monopole created by Choueiry Group.
Having said this, I thought of opening a thread on this forum to help OTV find a way to penetrate more effectively the market of advertising in a way it can get its share of the pie fairly and squarly. What do you think we, as FPMers can do in order to push for OTV, what do you think we can do against the companies who dont put ads on OTV? | | | | | The Following 11 Users Say Thank You to Carrera For This Useful Post: | Boris® (23rd April 2008), freelebanonn (22nd April 2008), HooKs (22nd April 2008), Ignatius (1st May 2008), Makiabel (22nd April 2008), Red Phoenix (22nd April 2008), Rors (22nd April 2008), sahm (29th April 2008), WoofWoofX (22nd April 2008), ziadmf (27th April 2008), †.) The only thing we can do is invest in OTV. Not for the money it will bring to the channel, but for all the advertising it will generate. Indeed, if companies knew that OTV had for example 30,000 investors, that is 30,000 families who will probably watch the news on their favorite TV channel everyday, then they will only be obliged to run their ads on OTV.
As for breaking the Choueiry monopoly or convincing Kiri or Pepsi to run an ad on OTV, it's out of a normal FPMer's hands in my opinion. | | | | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to johnnyFPM For This Useful Post: | | | Registered Member

Dont you think OTV knew about this problem before its opening? they surely prepared plans for advertisement , as it is the main source of income for any TV station!!!
NTV have the same problem since many years now , and Tahssin Khayat talked about this monopoly of Chouairy group many times . | | | | | Registered Member

Very very good point in this thread indeed.
I know very little about the industry, so my question might seem elementary, but....
Why doesn't OTV create a strong PR group that will personally go from one big company to the next with all these stats and try to convince managers to place ads directly?
I mean, do the ads HAVE TO GO through a company like the one Choueiry has??? | | | | | Registered Member

I will tell you how these things works
Suppose i am the owner of a whiskey brand. I want to advertise it. I go to an advertising agency and tell them to produce a TVC to my brand, and to book my ad in different TV stations, consequently my tv budget will get divided between the media my agency chose. (knowing that sometimes, i chose the media and impose it on the ad agency)
In general, the budget is spread among TVs according to their ratings. Nowadays, OTV is #2 station after LBC, and that according to the most biased measuring tool: stat-ipsos that is part of Choueiry monopoly. So logically, if we want to abide by stat-ipsos, OTV should have the 2nd part of the pie.
But... unfortunately OTV dont!
Many advertising agencies are boycotting OTV, other company owners dont want to hear about OTV, others fight against OTV and so on... | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to Carrera For This Useful Post: | | | Registered Member

You can't force people to advertise on OTV, but what you can do is publicly declare the names of those products who are boycotting OTV,
For example, if there is a cheese brand called "Red Cheese" and they are boycotting OTV for political reasons, people should know about it so they boycott the product in return. Once the owners of "Red Cheese" realize that their product is being boycotted because they boycotted OTV for political reasons, they will come and advertise on OTV.
What we need is the names of those products who are boycotting OTV. | | | | | The Following 12 Users Say Thank You to X For This Useful Post: | Carrera (22nd April 2008), iamlebanese (16th May 2008), L'arbalette (22nd April 2008), Makiabel (22nd April 2008), MPL Jeunes (23rd April 2008), Nadim (22nd April 2008), OrangeMusk (22nd April 2008), Red Phoenix (22nd April 2008), thekop (26th April 2008), Toni_R (22nd April 2008), Youchka (22nd April 2008), †.) carrera, thank you for your valuable thread and welcome to the forum. You are talking about agencies boycotting OTV for its political affiliation, does the same apply for Manar/NBN and NTV??? and are all the marketing companies owned by 14 march groups?? | | | | | | |
