well Jorge, i guess i can help a bit. I am currently doing my PhD in Clinical Chemistry with Molecular Medicine specializattion at Cleveland State University. I got my BS in Medical Laboratory Technology from AUB, and my MS in Clinical Chemistry from the University of Westminster in London, UK.
I c ur lost in whether to do Medicine or whether to go into research. Well for me, i wasnt really into medicine, i never liked it. My roommates and most of my friends are MDs, but am happy i didnt chose that path.
a PhD in molecular biology, wouldnt be a bad idea, u will have the option to work in research, in the medical field, or in pharmaceutical companies.
However if u choose research, its a very stressful lifestyle, especially in the US, cos u will always be after Grants, thats how researchers survive. I wouldnt wanna lead the same lifestyle that my supervisor leads. thats why when am done, am gonna head either into industry, medical field, or pharmaceuticals.
However, there is one field that u can look at, which is in between Medicine and Biology, which is Pharmacy. Pharmacy is a good idea, u take some prerequisites while ur getting ur Biology degree, then apply for pharmacy schools. In 7 years (3biology+4 Pharmacy) u will have earned a PharmD (Dr. in Pharmacy) and their will be a 100K/yr job waiting for u when u graduate. There is a lot of demand on Pharmacists in the US, that they r recruiting from all over the world/ I have a lot of friends that are PharmDs, they came to the US to work after graduating. Its the only major in Lebanon, that u will be able to go work in the US, without even coming to the US to continue ur studies. ya3ne straight from leb.
Since ur in NJ u wont have such a problem.
Anyways, if u need anything PM me, and i will be glad to help. If u want leave me ur phone number as well, and we can discuss that over the phone if u want to.
