Default Concerned about my career - 23rd June 2009

Dear all,

I am writing this since I am concerned about my career. I have been working and stuck for 3 years in the same position position. I am a graduate of MIS and I work in business in a large Lebanese company. In this position, I am not being able to grow and use my experience in any other company.
I am thinking of taking Oracle courses in a learning institution (PL/SQL) so that I would have a chance to change my job, and keep in track with my career. I have learned a bit in DBMS softwares in universities.
So what do you think, would that help me change my job even if i do not have enough experience on what I learn.
Thanks for anyone who answer this... I would be thankful if software developers/IT could answer this question too. Is it difficult to find companies which hire entry level for reports developer?

Best regards.

Hi there (coldplay fan ??), well though i am not into programming and development, since my field is networking, but i can tell you 1 thing for sure is that certificates will help you boost your career, so if you are stuck in the same lousy job (aren't we all?) and can't find any replacement and you think that your time is going to waste, well use it to strengthen your cv by obtaining some certificates in your domain, i think there are Oracle DB certifications and stuff like that which you can study and attend the official tests and obtain certificates... good luck :)

If you want to start in the networking domain, obtaining CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is the right thing to do. Then there will be the professional levels like CCNP or CCIP (internetwork prof.) or CCVP (voice prof.) or CCSP (security prof.) ... Just get the latest CCNA pdf file from the web, cisco press or Sybex and you can self study it (if you are having problems finding the correct pdf, PM me), then the final step before doing the exam is practicing the exam with the "pass4sure" and "testking" stuff, but leave that as the last stage.

Hi coldplayer,

First you should find out if you really like DB programming so you can learn it fast and succeed in it. I can tell 2 Oracle courses with self practice can put u on the right track.

As for job market, I don't know much about Lebanon, but all SW developers start somehow, nobody was born with experience. And as a Software developer, I see that there are always open positions for Oracle developers and administrators.

My view is forget programming or anything related to IT.

An IT person is born every minute on this planet and you will never ever compete with the Indian mass production who are spitting out "Oracle" engineers on a minute by minute business. Regardless if they are knowledgable or not, but IT outsourcing is the flavor of the month.

The market is already saturated with all the "Patels" of this world, and YOU WILL reach the ceiling with that type of skill.

I suggest you take this opportunity and take a masters course in Business Administration while you are riding the wave in this company while you get income. You will expand your skills to a strategic decision maker point of view and making business decisions rather than rebooting routers.

HI,

I agree on the IT outsourcing and business consulting area, which even many ITs and SW developers want to join.
But just few comments :)

How many decision making positions are available in comparison to IT (programming and development)? Simply not comparable.
Which positions were affected by the crisis? In all outsourcing companies (big companies) I can tell that IT is the least affected branch.

IT has many opportunities, you can earn a respected salary with little experience, with business u'll live with little salary for many years hoping one day u'll get the proper position that can feed you :)

I think an MBA would be excellent for an IT persons' career, that's what I'm planning on doing.

thats a little bit harsh dont you think ?

Anyway, it really up to the person whether he/she likes to work as a technical or not. But mostly high rated technical people with some business knowledge (provided by MBA for example) end up being Managers (IT Mangers and other division Managers...)

Thanks guys...
I think I will consider taking Oracle courses this summer. I would prefer to work in IT rather than business since IT field has more $$$ and fits better my qualities.
