ROBERT ABI NADER :
It may be argued that not every little girl grows up dreaming about the day she walks down the aisle with the man she loves – but many do. When that day comes, make sure you choose the right designer who will understand your needs and dress you beautifully. In Lebanon , a number of designers have become well known, regionally and internationally, and one name that prominently comes to mind is Robert Abi Nader. The renowned fashion designer met with What's Up ? to share his thoughts on today's brides and also to give us a peek at his new collection.
Describe the typical bride you design for?
A Lebanese bride is always up-to-date with the latest trends. More importantly, she wants to be the most unique bride to date. She seeks simplicity and elegance. My bride must turn heads when she walks into her wedding. I like my brides to be sexy, but of course in a classy way. This is what I really concentrate on while designing a dress for a bride, unless it is for more conservative clients. But, I always find a way around creating sophistication and sexiness, bringing out the beauty in every woman.
How do you go about designing a wedding dress for a woman?
Most of my clients come in knowing what they want – but what they want is not always what suits them best. I work with them and study every detail of their body type and imagine what will suit them.
Of course learning more about the bride's personality, as well as more details of the wedding will help me design a special dress for her. Wedding details include its theme, whether it's a big or small wedding, is it indoors or out doors, and so on, before I go into the designing stage. But at the end of the day, my aim while designing is to guarantee that people will be wooed by the dress and talk about it even after the wedding is over.
Their wedding day is a day that they have been dreaming of all of their lives – so they should be wearing their dream dress, to say the least.
What are the trends in wedding gowns to look out for this summer?
Well, of course we have gone through the phase of adding color to a wedding dress. But, I never felt that it added any value and somehow took away from the special effect of the dress. I would go for white or beige, but this summer, my wedding dresses are designed with both white and beige colors in the same dress.
The dress has to have a grand look, with more details to make it look richer than ever. I don't only concentrate on the front of the dress, but also its back. It's so easy to just add a zipper, but there should be creativity, especially if the bride has a beautiful back. It all depends on the bride, her style and, of course, her community.
The A-line cut is what's mostly in fashion, rather than puffy dresses, because it's simple and light. But, of course, a bride can go for the style she likes – whether traditional ball gown or dramatic mermaid-train, her wedding dresses should celebrate her body.
Describe your collection for spring/summer 2006?
This year's collection is described as the “rainbow.” There are a lot of fresh colors including pinks, blues and other calm shades. But this does not mean that I have not used red, black and white in my designs – the use of these colors goes without saying.
Glamorous evening dresses are either very long or knee length, with emphasis given to a woman's hips. Gowns hug a woman from her waist down to below her behind line. Rich fabrics like taffeta, lace and muslin are used. In a word, the collection is very ‘lively.'
What advice would you give a bride?
I think that the most important tip to give a bride is to simply trust her wedding dress designer. She should be relaxed and know that he or she will do their best to make her the most beautiful and unique bride. If you don't trust the person, then definitely work with another designer.
You need to feel truly confidant, beautiful, and comfortable in your wedding dress. Sometimes brides don't realize that a comfortable dress will help them enjoy their wedding more. For example, some brides like to wear strapless wedding dresses, which I don't advise, because without noticing, the bride will unconsciously pull the dress up every five seconds and will only notice that in her wedding video. In general, I'm against eccentricity and I don't like dresses that are hard to wear. A dress has to be original and elegant, even if elaborate details are added – it should still maintain its timeless feel. | | | |

I adore the invitation card of my sister. everyone in Lebanon who received it was WAW so original....
She did the invitation as if it was a ticket to travel. There is a pochette fiyya kell el tickets and on every ticket there is the place where you live and the place of the wedding as a final destination and there is a small word with their 2 names...
If you are invited to the dinner, you have another boarding card from the church to the dinner. The name of every person invited is written in each ticket.
On the pochette el barra, there is a plane on the sky with a bandrole written in it the name of the bride and her husband.
It took more than 2 months to prepare it but it is amazing and everyone in Leb and even in France are saying that it is one of the most original invitation they got!
Hope I will have a good idea for my wedding in few years...
Cheers! | | | | | | |
