saying "I DO" around the world

Today's couples often look to the past , in order to bring a unique , personal touch to their modern day wedding celebrations . By showcasing wedding rituals and practices seen throughout the world .

you can be inspired by different world wide rituals so that you can celebrate your special day in your own special way .

"Spain"

in Spain the bride wears orange blossom in her hair as a symbol of fertility . the groom offers the bride thirteen gold coins as a sign of his future protection and to bear witness to his willingness to take care of her .

"China"

The strangest tradition in chinese wedding is the bride's dress color !!!! it is Red .

"Greece"

in Greece , they smash plates , the grooms mother or sister will do the throwing !!! During the ceremony , the bride carries an ivy branch to evoke unending love.

Jamaica

A dark fruitcake liberaly laced with rum is served at wedding receptions . following the celebration the wedding party slices the remainder of the wedding cake and mails to friends and relatives who were unable to attend the wedding reception.

Sweeden

the bride in sweeden carries a silver coin given by her father in her left shoe and another from her mother in her right shoe .

Puerto Rico

While a priest is performing a Puerto rican wedding ceremony he blesses a plate of coins and give them to the groom . after the wedding vows hav been exchanged , the groom gives the plate of coins to the bride which she keeps as awedding present from her husband . It represent good luck and prosperity for the newlyweds .

India

in India marriages are arranged when the couple are still very young , the importance of marriage is fundamental and the festivities last for sevral days .the cermony in the temple is very colorful with red and yellow . Brides decorate their feet with rings embelished with symbolic and zodiacal precious stones which relate to the date of birth . Diamonds hav a negative connotation which becomes positive when they are given or recieved as a gift .

Italy

In the veneto region the groom walks to the bride's house and , together he walks with the bride and th whole wedding party to the church . on the way town residents would present the bride with many chalenges . for exemple they put a broom on the ground andif the bride notices it and picks it up to put it away she was concidered a good housekeeper . then she might come across a crying child the couple is supposed to quiet him and make him smile this would mean that they will be good parents . In some regions th pplin the village would set up a sawhorse a log and a double handled saw , the bride and groom must saw the log apart with prompting and cheering of the crowd . when the job is finished and the log cut , this demostrates their partnership in love nd marriage .

Russia

once the reception has begun a relative or close friend will make a wedding toast to the bride and groom .in keeping with russian customs everyone throws their champagne glasses on the floor it is considered good luck if the glasses break when they hit the ground

Scotland

a universal custom is the one of the bride wearing "something old , something borrowed , something blue" leving the church one tradition has the bride's father cutting a ribbon that has been affixed across the church gate as a sign of setting her free.

Turkey

the turkish marriage celebration continues after the wedding ceremony for several days . the newlywed bride may return home the morning after her wedding vows to see her family and friends who then might perform a henna ritual on her a turkish bride might wear a beautifully embroidered silk wdding dress with a red velvet cape .

Portugal

Portugese wedding receptions typically involve traditional music and a lot of dancing while guests exchange stories about the bride and the groom . the ancient custom of passing the brides shoes around to all the guests to recieve monetary donations that will help the couple set up their new home is still maintained today and guests eagerly join the festivities and participate in this ritual . Traditionally there will also be a money dance where the bride's shoe is passed around the dance floor as young (and not so young) men pay for the privilege of dancing with the bride .

I don't like short wedding dresses. I think they are not appropriate for a church ceremony... and it's utter bad taste for a bride (at least a Catholic one) wearing a short dress. It's like screaming to the guests: "Heeeey, Look what you're loosing!!"

Anyway, just my opinion...
