Default Thread Of medicine And Medical Problems - 23rd July 2007

The Oath of Hippocrates

I swear by GOD that I will fulfil according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:

To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art - if they desire to learn it - without fee and covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the medical law, but no one else.

I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.

Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.

What I may see or hear in the course of the treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep to myself, holding such things shameful to be spoken about.

If I fulfill this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.

Thanks lallous i hope we get ur help in the issues that may be posted on this thread...
I forgot to say i am also a medical Intern and that Ethical issues are also to be debated on this Thread.

My first Sequence of questions are about medical secrecy:

1-What about a Married Man who has lately Aquired AIDS some how and and He doesnt want His wife to know about his condition?how do u think his doctor must act?

2-A child was cheked for some trauma and the doctor thinks that this is a kind of abuse by the parents or some one else , the parents said nothing useful and gave no evidence that it was an accidental trauma!!
how must a doctor act?this issue is of great importance in Lebanon.

the doctor should act as the patient or the client ask him... the doctor dont have the right to interfere in the pvt life of the client

This is a terminal disease, doesn't the wife have a say in her life? Does the husband have the right to give her a disease that could potentially kill her just for the sake of hiding his extramarital affairs?

didnt said he should hide ... i said the patient ay 2 the doc what he want 2 do ..then the doc inform him about the case and how its dangerous but if the patient was " borne" the doc dont have the right to interfere 2 his life ... im not saying that the client is right or no .. i was talking with an objective way :)

Why it is moral to Interfere in the kid issue and not in the Man-wife issue...
in both cases the patient is in grave danger???

Its immoral not to interfere in both cases.
In the case of the wife, she has the right to know if her husband is a potemtial weapon against her.
In the case of the child, he/she has the right of a life free of violence.
In "modern" societies, both cases result in interference by the authorities.
In the case of a husband with aids, he is held responsible for not spreading the disease to others.
In the case of the child, authoroties immediatly intervene to protect his/her right.
In "modern" societies, both cases result in informing the proper authorities by the treating doctor.
