Default Stop the arguileh! - 5th October 2009

Report from the WHO (World Health Organization on waterpire (arguileh) smoking:
http://www.who.int/tobacco/global_in...tion_Final.pdf

Basically, one arguileh smoking session is equivalent to inhaling the smoke from 100 to 200 cigarettes. Read page 13 of the report for a full explanation of the consequences.

I post this because the use of the waterpipe has apparently exploded in Lebanon in the last 5 years, and people seem to be misinformed about it (they still think that it's less harmful than the cigarette).

This could have disastrous effects on the health of the Lebanese in the future.

Although I don't necessarily trust the usual WHO reports , because many times, they are made by bunch of incompetent morons who fail to do their homework properly, and prefer the cheap alarmist propaganda and easy and quick conclusions, over scientific and hard evidenced approaches, yet i shall agree that the Arguileh should be better regulated in Lebanon, especially around children and non-smokers.

This is becoming a serious issue and i can tell you that I, although a heavy cigarettes smoker, non-smoker of water pipe, am getting nausea each time that i go in a restaurant or cafe that serves Arguileh, so much the smoke and smell is dense and aggressive...Even in open air surfaces.

But the WHO should be ashamed of its work anyway especially from the way it sometimes issues its ignorant "ADVISORY NOTES".

2 points that are absent from the document and its so-called "preliminary studies":

1-The nature of the substance burned in the Arguileh called "M3assal". I recently hear that it has 0% tobacco in it and that is in fact only dehydrated fruit skins (?) Is that true?

2-The danger of inhaling burned sugar in such products...with or without tobacco.

PS:The problem with the people who often make those WHO studies, is that they are not always well informed and sometimes, not even equipped to engage studies and issue recommendations, yet they are fierce anti-tobacco mouths, and often lack the minimum of objectivity and methodology, and they always freak out when they hear the word "nicotine"...Which is not the effective problem in smoking actually.

I would not be surprised if someday they issue some "ADVISORY NOTE" to put the label "tobacco product" on tomatoes and ask member States to regulate it as such...Yes...They can be that much stupid...and more believe me.
