Default The Power Of Stress - 17th September 2007

The Power of Stress
Name a six letter word that seems to encompass every pain, fear, and challenge of life. No, it's not Dianne, but that would be a good guess. Let's try s-t-r-e-s-s.
From the common cold to cancer, stress appears to be that proverbial causal straw that breaks the camel's back! However, not everyone experiences stress the same way. Some people actually thrive during stressful circumstances while others in the same scenario barely survive.
The body's self-regulating system can be termed homeostasis, and every moment every cell strives towards equilibrium (or homeostasis) while maintaining disequilibrium. This movement enables the body to maintain balance, no matter the environment. When everything remains the same - equilibrium between the inside and the outside of a cell - there is no potential for movement. Because movement is the essence of life, tension is a necessary ingredient for cells, people, nature, to exist. Life is in a constant flux, and living in the Now, the balance point is always changing. Without a certain level of stress, we would lose our ability to adapt and survive. Bottom line, if there is no tension or movement, the result is death.
For most people, the greatest fear, even beyond death, is the fear of change. But because change is a necessary constant for life, people who fear of change often find themselves feeling extremely stressed out!
Stress can be due to negative thoughts, eating dead foods (sugar or processed food), relationships, finances, dehydration, pollution, injuries, geopathic stress (water lines), cosmic stress (Mercury in retrograde), lack of good quality sleep, electromagnetic stress - the list goes on. Although not all stress is negative, and one stressful experience usually does not have the ability to create a catastrophic result, multiple stressful experiences can break down any system.
However, just as the roots and bark of a tree grow deeper and thicker with every storm the tree endures, with the right set of tools, every cell in the body has the potential to become stronger when it experiences stress. The ability to change in response to each and every experience (stressor) we encounter is at the very heart of the process of growth, adaptation, and flow. This can be observed from the cellular level to the macrocosmic level of species survival.
The body's transition from stress to degeneration occurs on an emotional, structural, biochemical and spiritual (electromagnetic field of the body) level when you do not have, or do not understand, the tools or strategies necessary for moving through life's experiences. In an attempt to restore balance, the blood pH becomes acidic. But even a minor fluctuation in the pH of the blood sets off a chain reaction: The body immediately responds to buffer this acidic reaction by pulling calcium from its greatest reservoir - the bones. While this is a wonderful homeostatic response, if the stress is not alleviated the bones eventually weaken. This acidic response leads to inflammation. Inflammation, either localized or systemic (throughout the entire body), will result in degeneration. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis are well-known imbalances in the body that are a part of this cycle of stress to degeneration.
However, because the body is an amazing self-healing organism, the degenerative affects of stress can be reversed! You can transform the stresses of your life into empowering experiences for evolving and thriving. There are two simple steps to reversing the disabling affects of stress: 1) Learn to recognize the difference between stressors you can control and ones over which you have no power. How many times have you found yourself holding on to negative emotions about an experience that you literally can't do anything about? This creates further stress that adds to the process of degeneration. Remember: You always have a choice.
2) Adopt healthy lifestyle habits, such as The Five Basics for Optimal Health: quantity, quality, and frequency of water, food, rest, exercise, and owning your power. Follow The Five Basics and you will find that you are able to flow through life as life flows through you.
Remember, we are all part of an infinite universe that is infinitely one. Recognizing this fact will help you to begin your journey back to optimal health and happiness!

Tell me about it, I am a stress head and recently I've been getting tightness in my chest muscle. It kills and I don't know how to make it go away. I am also having trouble taking deep breaths and sleeping.

It also makes me very anxious and it just keeps compounding.

Help me!!!

Stress is a killer it starts in the mind and becomes a physical ailment manifesting in Tachycardia, lack of sleep and sometimes eating disorders, you try to calm yourself down but those thoughts comeback and the bodily aches and pains comeback too...

How many times you went to the doctor in a horrible pain asking for a diagnosis and he sends you back saying you are fine there is nothing wrong with you?
Stress can make you wish you got a disease that you can treat or else you are in the unknown.
For example a tragic event happens in your life, but things start working out after a while and you think you will be safe and everything went to normal but then stress doesn't go away and you fall in a catalystic self-destructing mood.
My way sometimes to ease things up is to convince myself that things will get better so everytime I imagine a stressful situation I trick my brain to stop it right away and explain that it is not what I think, especially if it is not imagination only and that I know what I am thinking about is for a fact happenning or going to happen.
That is the tough part when you trick your mind into processing a reality as if it is 100% a lie, because usually we don't stress about inexistant situations we actually stress over very real things and we try to process them as if they are not there to avoid being stressed and depressed.

You're so right. But sometimes when you try to trick your brain it works for a while and then this knot in your stomach kicks in and your anxiety attacks resume, and this is the worst part because then i stop eating and sleeping and it is horrible!

Abufijli, you seem to be very worried but remember stress is part of life and we should get used to it.
Try to spend some of your time doing activities that can make you feel exhausted like martial art! You'll feel tired at night and sleep better.

Don't take life personally. Sometimes I get stressed with exams at uni, or when I am waiting for something that never comes, etc, and in those times my mind goes blank . But then I ask myself why should I care with things I cannot change most of the time?

Prolonged stress can make you more susceptible to certain illnesses like depression, panic disorder heart palpitations and it will ruin your humor!
Try the acunpunture, it made wonders to my sister! And talk to God (I highly recommend this one!).

yiii i remember i had to write a report once about stress (en psychosociologie) , so i can say a thing or two here!

first of all, stress is just a process of adjustment to a situation, an event or a disturbance so that our system can maintain a certain balance in order to face external modifications. Stress isn't necessarily harmful but can be very vital sometimes!

if we take the Order-Disorder scale, we'll see that from an "order" perspective, stress can motivate people to be more organized, structured, alerted, and quicker in taking decisions and initiatives. ya3ne they will have a better performance!
from a disorder perspective, stress can have negative effects when the person spends too much time on details, can't manage to get over the weird feeling of stress in order to concentrate, panics because time is passing and end up messing things up, or not respecting a deadline..etc...

on a Power-Weakness scale, stress gives power thanks to biological modifications (specially the adrenaline) that pushes the person to physically move and be more motivated to give good results as well as strength to face problems! However if the stress persists, or is badly managed it can results in a feeling of disgust and laziness towards work! this is when the stress becomes a weakness

ya3ne to cut a long story short, stress is good but needs to be managed and used correctly!
