Default Poll: what do you think of the Old Testament - 18th March 2007

I dont really like religious discussion in the FPM forum, but i'd like to have a poll here about the Old testament...
The OT is composed of several jewish books (asfar), among which the Torah...

It should look clear that the OT is not written with the same spirit as the NT, that God following to the OT is very different from God as pictured in the NT.

So what do u think about the OT?

1- it's fine and it should go with the NT in one book, the Bible
2- it should be part of the Bible, but it should be studied from another perspective than the NT (plz elaborate)
3- it's very different from the NT and should not be part of the Bible

well , i am not that good in religions but i can tell u that in the old testemony i found few things that i didn't like that much and when i made comparation between the new testemony and the old one i saw the different between the two and i prefer that the old testemony to be a part alone but as now there is the new testemony there is no problem because most of the people read the new testemony

I don't like the God in the Old Testament. I find him mean, childish, emotional, hypocritical and most of all unsaintly

The old testament is a history book.

Much like the New testament perhaps, but very little of the old testament is actually claimed to be a "teaching" of the supposed God.

Jews started to write it when they were exiled to Babylon and away from their temple. Writing it became their substitute to praying in the temple.

So basically the Old testament is how they interpreted events that happened to them and linked them to god. (ex: return to israel as reward, floods as punishments, etc.....).

Shouldnt be taken for much more even for religious christians.

many books in the Old Testaments were written by Jews clerics.
many unreal things were written & many of the stories were originated from Mesopotamia.
i don't know but i don't find it real definitely the NT is different

God in the Old testamant is a freaking psycho. He just wants to kill. He kills everyone but noah, he wants the son of Abraham dead, he wants to kill peole that don't listen to priests, homosexuals, people who fornicate...

Syrien
in the old testament it was all about a prophecy i mean they were predicting (the prophets)the coming of the messiah , le messie - le sauveur the savior . plus God was giving His ppl his teachings and often we see he was a very hard and stict harsh God. he many times punished them using extrem ways . God in the Old Testament seem to be heartless and and very unmercifull . in the new testament we see things changing it is the fulfillemnt of the prophecy the birth of the savior ...God become mercyfull and tolerant his son is Given tohuman kind as the ultimate sacrifice pour le pardon des Hommes .

now as a christian for me the new testament is The Book of my faith shahadat 7ayat ... the old testament for me is a history book if you want even tho i see in it many unclear parts ... for exemple the age of the prophets some times it seems they lived 700 years or the years of exode as if time had a diffrent dimention at this period so every story takes the form of a legend more then a true story ... any way many aspects for me are not very comprehensive .

Thumbs up 18th March 2007

I agree with the perspective of coralie.

The OT is full of preperation/introduction to the comming messiah, along with all the stuff mentioned in previous posts. What i find so valuable about the OT, is how much more insight one can gain after reading the NT.

They are so interconnected, and they support each other really well.
Ive done some great study, where something in the NT illistrates the same principles/morals, as something in the OT; eg: Ephesians 1:17 and Isaiah 11:2 these scriptures that are interconnected give a glipse into the ways in which God works and His promises etc

Really, to understand the OT one must read and grasp the message of the NT, i dont feel they should be seen as having a great division or seperation.
The OT was written exclusively for the jewish ppl; and establishes God's character, desire and expectations for ppl, along with the consequences (some disturbing)

Where as the NT is all about Jesus...who He is to God...and what effect that has on non-jews aka gentiles, it is the revelation of God the father and detailed instruction and encouragement on the christian walk.
Often after reading the OT i get a whole new appreciation for Jesus and just exactly what He has done.

The bible is soooo deep....and can be understood by all ages...its living, and u can read the same scripture 100 times and it still reveals new things.

God in the old testament is too cruel and he has a short temper. He also hates women too much in it, which makes you wonder why he bothered creating them in the first place. Besides he meddles too much into his creations affairs as if he is bored in the heavens and he needs someone to talk too. Fair enough but why get so bloody about it when you have the capacity to change the mind of some evil person and their conduct and make the world hunky dory for all.

There are nice graphic stories there. My favourite is Sodom and Gomorrah.
But overall I really prefer Alf Leileh w Leileh , somehow I find the stories in it much more believable.

if u believe that the OT was written by jews without any divine intervention, then it shouldnt be a sacred text!! and the vatican (and orthodox church) is wrong about considering it to be part of the bible...

but let's not forget that the book of Isaiah prophecizes about Christ...
