Default Obesity in western world - 13th May 2009

Obesity in Australia
Recent studies show that 47% of women and 63% of men are overweight or obese. Australians are at the point where it is almost more "normal" to have a weight problem than not.

Over the last decade as a nation we have continued to gain weight. If the current trend continues, it is estimated that by 2010, 70% of Australians will be above their healthy weight range.

When i first arrived here i was shocked by how fat people are some are really young to be that fat and it is scary as the government now trying to let people be aware of the side effect of obesity and warning people to give healthy snacks to kids at school ..they don't sell chips and sweets at school so kids don't eat it..with all the warning you find lots of kids also obese..
In the beginning when i was in lebanon i thought that obesity was sickness, but actually it isn't.Thanks God we are not obese in Lebanon I guess our food helps to keep us healthy..
So the question that puzzles me what in your opinion causes obesity is it health issue is it food..why in some countries you don't find that large number of obesity?/

It has to be the large nr of chemicals in the food, low nutrition value, and the lack of sufficient sport activities.
Kids often sit the whole day long, at school and at home in front of TV or PC and eat unhealthy fast foods.
Wherever the american fast food comes into fashion obesity is growing very fast.

Kids are also very spoiled and brainwashed by stupid commercials.

Maybe your kids have that slim type of body who can eat as much as they want but they dont gain weight:) but it is rare

It true in Lebanon there are few extra obese people, but lets be honest, it is very common especially for men to be at least a bit chubby as they love their tummy so much:D and Lebanese foods are so tasty!!

Am not sure but maybe the European and North American people have different type of body/genes than ME people, which makes them gain weight easier.

ps: about junk food in school, Jamie Oliver had an initiative in London to tackle this problem, he introduced healthy foods into canteens, needless to say kids hated it, they want to eat just burgers

I think the weather in Lebanon plays a role too! In summer in Lebanon ma 2elak nafs 3al akel, all u want to eat is fruit and juices ta tbawrid w tabboule w fattoush w bouza. Ba3den if u exercice in lebanon u actually sweat not like her, u exercice for an hour w ma bte3ra2 I remember when i lived in Lebanon i spent most of my summers on the beach with my friends swimming and playing, this all plays a role in staying fit. The winters in Sweden are dangerous all you crave for is sugar because it is so cold and dark, chocolate and candy, plus we dont go out that much in winter so we stay at home watching tv and akid with chips and popcorn and no exercice

I seriously have the same questions in mind. If you take a look in France, people are so skinny specially in Paris and they eat so much junk food and look at the asians, specially the chinese on how much they eat oily food and unhealthy food and look how skinny they are.

in the western societies like north america and Australia I am sure it is the chemicals who does have a big and huge effect on the body but I also think that those western soecieties are also like that, they are made this way. In quebec, specially in the city I live, English and French canadians eat the same food and you can see that in Montreal people are alot more skinnier than Ottawa and they eat the same kind of food but in Montreal, people walk more than Ottawa and the french canadians are more skinnier than the English canadians. In france, people drink alot of wine and maybe that has a big effect on loosing the extra calories that they eat during the day specially the cheese.

I think many factors could contribute to the obesity:
1)- mainly the composition of the food: in USA and Canada for instance, the food industry uses more sugar and salt compared to the same product sold in Europe or Lebanon. Meat products are full of drugs (vitamins, growth hormones, sexual hormones,...). Processed foods full of junk products whose precise effects on the human appetite hormone is unknown. A very generous use of fat in many foods and food products.
Note that most of these factors contribute to the increase in the incidence of all kinds of cancers and other diseases (like diabetes and blood hypertension in US kids).
2)-the lack of exercises does not help for sure: children are attracted to TV, computer games,...
What I noticed: in general, canadians are more fat than europeans and lebanese but much less fat than americans ! The food dish is twice larger in an american than in a canadian restaurant !

I don't know about China, but in France people watch out when they eat.

Health is a major concern and they actually exercise.

Plus the government actually does its job when it comes to informing people and surveillance over manufacturers and imports!

On the other hand I don't understand why we should praise what the Lebanese do cause I'm really sure that we have one of the biggest ratios of heart and cardiac problems over total population in the world.

True Lebanese food is certainly the best when it comes to healthy and stuff, but our ancestors surely did not eat meat two times a day nor they had all those fried dishes we heavily prepare nowadays.

80 to 90% of the Lebanese men I know have cholesterol/triglycerides and of course, the famous kerché.

Ma the famous saying goes : رجّال بلا كرش ما بيسوا قرش

Cheers!
