Icon5 Nature or Nurture ?? - 10th October 2006

From where does our personality come from?
Does our personality come more from the nature, or in other words "genes" of parents, or does it come from nurture, which is the experience in life and what we have learned.
From my point of view I think that the both create ones personality. However, Which one is stronger?

1st of all, both parents and experience affect our personalities... but with time, experience replaces parents

Finally: You can change your personality in one second when you want to...

Well, I think genes play the major role in our personality, but this does not mean that we should rule out the influence of society and life experience in "shaping" our personality.

Tests on 3-month old babies showed different reactions to different situations, for example, how to react to fear, anger.. etc

The base of all this is our genes.

Cheers ~

One of the books concerning the psychology of children, known internationnally, is Tout ce joue avant 6 ans.

Well personnally, after babysitting lot of babies with different kind of families over France, I discovered that the facts in this book are right! Per example, for a child of monoparental family it is easier to live with it if the separation took place before the six years old while it has lot of impacts of children above this age!
I think that there is in us, a part innate! A part created by our parents that will always reflect in our personnality ( it is what was worked before our 6 years old), a part of our education after this 6 years old given by our parents, teachers, family, society and then our experience in life!
Our personnality is a real mix!
Regards,

Another possibility to entertain is that perhaps what many of us feel are innate acharactersitics due to genes are actually learned and hardwired before this critical age [6].

Perhaps we mistake extremely early [and highly influential] nurture for nature.

The thing is that the Human Genome Project provided us with one shock discovery when they finally mapped our DNA: that there are A LOT less genes than we thought.

What does this mean? Well...with the complexities of a human being...physical and psychological...along with this realization...scientists have suggested that perhaps characterisitcs are combinations of genes.

That makes me wonder if perhaps these combiniations can vary depending on environmental influences....resulting in [for example] the personality we see.
