Default Illegal drugs and medicine - 9th January 2007

The slight difference between the illegal drugs and the medicines is nothing more than a percentage of use (dosage).

It would be interesting to list the 'herbs' and other components that might habe a double use : "legal" and illegal drugs, according to the volume in which it is used.

It would be great if we can develop this slight information to something more relevant.

there are not many medications which are considered illegal drugs and medications at the same time...

the ones which come to my mind right now:
-Cocaine which is used in certain eyes condition
-Tincture of Opium used for severe cases of diarrhea
-TetrahydroCannabinoid (component of Marijuana) used in chemotherapy-induced nausea

but there are many medications especially opiates which have potential for abuse and are used illegally..

in a recent report broadcasted on NPR a year ago, a Percocet pill (similar to Di-antalvic in Lebanon) can be sold for 80$ in the black market..

some people may also be addicted to other less harmful medications like benzodiazepines (Xanax).. some even can be addicted to phenergan and benadryl....

Yes, but what's wrong with a couple of joints? It's funny because 90% of the Lebanese took it at some time. And their parents did, and their parents' parents.

Yup, the good old villager Lebanese ancestor puffed.

Some illigal drugs are used in the manner you described...ie, as legal; depending on their dosage.

For example opiates for pain relief, amphetamine for behaviour modification... ADD and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome etc In the 50's and 60's psychologists used MDMA (better known as Extacy) as a therapy tool for couples.....

Generally speaking, drugs become illigal after a usage issue arises in society...there was even a day when caffine and tobacco were illigal. I forgrt the man's name, but this dude smoked tobacco in france b4 it was popular, and was put in prison...by the time he got out, everyone was smoking it....lol

But drugs have a toll on the body....it is the very nature of them. But some prescription meds, ie "legal" drugs are debatebly more harmfull than illigal ones. Benzo's for example, have horrific withdrawal symptoms, and are incredibly addictive....for some people, one week of use.... provides 2 weeks of withdrawal.....

Drug studies are very interesting to say the least

Im not sure of what u mean by "something more relevent", could u pls expand?

Hey Felix!
thanks for your reply.. in fact, that's exactly what i meant with "something more relevant".

to elaborate a bit more: it would be great if we can compare between the ingredients of legal and illegal drugs, discuss the availability of the basic ingredients, the different ways they are treated in order to get either a drug or a medicine...

addiction is something that is not really defined, because it goes with chemicals and psychological.lately we are talking about addiction to the mobile phone and it goes to every thing that can be a part of your interest till it becomes a passion and a way of life to which you feel a need as a complement of your life and without which you will not be at ease .each interest to an object could be an addiction and the loss of it will create an emptiness or mood trouble. why this problem is surging now ?too many reasons make you an addict the less are chronic disease. i don't see persons with no addiction nowadays . some very addictive or lethal chemicals are not considered here . in fact those lethal or highly disturbing addictions are the ones that could be major addictions to be avoided. and all depends on your health condition.

The cough medicine dextromethrophan (Bisolvon Dry Cough) taken in high doses will produce hallucinations and euphoric feeling.

Quote:
Illicit Use:

The abuse of DXM by teenagers and young adults seems related to its over-the-counter availability and more recently to the sale of the powdered form over the Internet. Most popular products for abuse are Coricidin HPB Cough and Cold Tablets and Robitussin cough syrup.

DXM abusers report a heightened sense of perceptual awareness, altered time perception, and visual hallucinations. The typical clinical presentation of DXM intoxication involves hyperexcitability, lethargy, ataxia, slurred speech, sweating, hypertension, and/or nystagmus. Abuse of combination DXM products also results in health complications from the other active ingredient(s), which include increased blood pressure from pseudoephedrine, potential delayed liver damage from acetaminophen, and central nervous system toxicity, cardiovascular toxicity and anticholinergic toxicity from antihistamines. There are reports of deaths from the abuse of DXM.
