Did you change country, city in the last months?

I am asking that because after leaving Lebanon, i gained 5 kilos even if i am still thin because of the modification of my quality of food! There is no more my mum to cook to me, sometimes fast food are the solution for teenagers! It wasn't my case, my problem was the Baguette!

Regards,

fatty liver also known as non-alcoholic fatty liver is a new epidemic in the world.

it is associated with overweight and obesity and mainly insulin resistance (ie. diabetes)... nevertheless, 25% of the patients may not have any of this.

this NAFLD can progress into steatohepatitis also known as NASH.. this is when the liver becomes inflamed because of the excess fat accumulating in it.

chronic inflammation of the liver can eventually lead to cirrhosis with all the complication associated with it from bleeding, cancer, fluid accumulation, renal failure, respiratory problem and even death.

liver cirrhosis development is not a 1 or 2 months issues, it takes several years to develop in NASH.

if there is no increase in liver enzymes (AST, ALT) checked by a simple blood test, the only intervention is usually weight reduction, exercise and discontinuation of any alcoholic beverages.

if liver enzymes start going up, first u need to make sure that u don't any associated liver diseases (like viral infections and others) and diet and weight reduction and control of diabetes if present become urgent matters.

there are a lot of studies on medications to put a hold on the development of NASH. small trials of metformin (glucophage) showed to be useless. small trial on glitazones (Avandia, Actos) showed some benefits and larger confirmatory ones are under way.

vitamin E may be helpful but a recent (2 years ago) study on intake of vitamin E supplements revealed an increase in all cause-mortality.

other meds (more or less experimental) are betaine, pentoxiphylline (trental) and other vitamins and anti-oxidants. those are still in experimental phase.

i hope this was helpful. if u need any further explanation. please say so..

Thanks Kappa, the problem with diet and weight reduction? I know should do excercises but as you know the liver cause fatigue to the body,I grabbed many herbal supplement pills like fish products, garlic, something for immune system..etc, just like a collection( pills only) I was advised that this won't help! I feel better with those supplements!

the liver doesn't cause fatigue to the body unless it is cirrhotic or the occuring injury is significant.

ideally Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) doesn't cause a significant liver injury until it develops into Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). moreover, it is indolent.
in other words, unless someone reaches cirrhosis, he should be able to exercise without any problems.

as for the herbal supplements. unless they are certified and controlled (u know exactly what's in them and are careful of the side effects), i wouldn't take any. we are seeing a lot of cases of severe liver injuries (few requiring liver transplant) from intake of those supplements.

note that the incidence of symptomatic liver injuries is very low.. meaning, among people who take supplements, very few develop problems.

The treatment of fatty liver is related to the cause. It is important to remember that simple fatty liver may not require treatment. The benefit of weight loss, dietary fat restriction, and exercise in obese patients is inconsistent.

Reducing or eliminating alcohol use can improve fatty liver due to alcohol toxicity. Controlling blood sugar may reduce the severity of fatty liver in patients with diabetes. Ursodeoxycholic acid may improve liver function test results, but its effect on improving the underlying liver abnormality is unclear.

check this site,, it has lots of Q&A about the same subject.

Can you elaborate LebArmenian? Where did you see it? How? and what do you know about the condition?

If you can share an experience with us, do not hesitate... we would all love to learn.

u mean, it looked like the strawberry skin in terms of consistency but not color...

right?

i think u r trying to describe micronodular cirrhosis... which in other words means end stage liver disease.....

end-stage liver disease is a pretty difficult condition to treat as many organs can affected...

ultimate therapy consists of liver transplantation..

the condition happens for people with high cholesterol level.

the normal skin type would be smooth , in this condition , it would be greenish and similar to a strawberry .

the one wid cancer would be like a good rock
