It's a special moment in people's lives and as such they want to make it memorable. It has nothing to do with cultures western or eastern but more with how a person wants to look back at that particular moment and remember it.
If I were to choose between the two options you presented I would say it's nice to increase a bit the dose of romanticism in your heart. Though it may not alter the real facts but it does create a special feel. Think of it like you get a nice gift from a special person, a gift that you truly liked. Which would you prefer,
Have it wrapped in newspapers or in nice gift wrapping paper?
Another thing Dalzi you must remember is that all in love is fair. And love is a fascinating emotion. Couples lick each other's ice cream and go wow. You cant imagine how difficult a task us cynics have to undertake to keep all these lovelorn smitten people's feet on the ground.
And I dont think Boiler is just inquiring for the sake of curiosity. He sounds like he is madly in love and doesnt want to show his hand so conspicuously.

Using the word wrapping reminded me of when I was first learning english. I went to the super market and the shopkeeper asked me what I was looking for and I said: Raping paper.
