Default Agnostics/Atheists in lebanon - 24th September 2008

I have a project at school where i have to make a research about how atheists and agnostics are viewed in Lebanon!

Are they rejected? Can they express their opinion openly? How do you think they are viewed by religious people? What do you think are the roots of this rejection?

Could you share your views and your experiences on the matter so that i can have a closer look on how the society functions. I would appreciate if also the religiouse people not only atheists and agnostics would also share their views!

Thank you in advance!

well i can tell you that, growing up, i had several atheist teachers in school. they were usually quite open about it and didnt really mind expressing their beliefs, even in a delicate sectarian climate like Lebanon. i believe such convictions may be rooted in their upbringing (parents?) , or perhaps, seeing blood being spilled in the name of religion and consequently, being disgusted by the whole thing.

as for how they are viewed by other lebanese, i cant really generalize. but i do think that one of the benefits of living in a multi-confessional state is that you tend to befriend folks from all sects and such a social upbringing helps to minimize sectarian mentality. this open-mindedness tends to extend to those whose beliefs may completely contradict with yours, such as atheists. being around different people helps you see that the "difference" is far less substantial than its made out to be by politicians and co.

either that, of course, or some folks have such a deeply ingrained sectarian mindset that those belonging to other religions and atheists alike are both sides of the same coin.

Are they rejected?
Depends on the community around them, the close community that is.

Yep, in Lebanon everyone can express his/her opinion freely, very freely, very very freely.

Depends on what religion you follow and how open you are to others. People differ miraculously, even those living under one roof.

Rebellion is one. Retarted religious beliefs is another. There are many more...

Please note in your assignment that Lebanon is a special phenomenon. There are the Christian atheists and the Muslim atheists. And you have the secular ahteists as well as the zealous fanatic ones.

I personally don't care what people believe in. I care for other things. Edward Said and Marcel Khalife are prophets. That when i hate communism more than hell.

Good luck with your work.

Good that you did that little reverse of the two-worded term!
I hope you realized how disrespectful, aggressive, and biased would an self-made term such as "atheist Muslim" or an "atheist Christian" would be!

Now, although a little off-topic, I'd like to amke two quick comments on that phenomenon of Christian atheism or Muslim atheism, etc..

Firstly, allthough the Lebanese Society would provide an ideal atmosphere for such "ideas" to prevail, but they're not so common in Lebanon to say the least!

Secondly, this existing and defined phenomenon holds the same amount of nonsense and contradiction as its terminological reversal!

This might help as well :)

I hope you dont share the same views of your sister though!

Now, as a brief comment on the subject, atheists in the Lebanese Society are like those rabbits along with some fierce predators and big peaceful herbivores in a nature reserve for wild life supervised by outside humans.

cheers,
