2012: A Y2K for the New Age
'Around … 2012, a large chapter of human history will be coming to an end, and a new phase of human growth will commence.'
By: Lisa Miller
From the magazine issue dated May 18, 2009

Scholars rarely love popularizers, and nowhere is this enmity more evident than in the battle over 2012—a date which, depending on your view, will coincide with the end of the world, the transformation of global consciousness, the end of the Mayan calendar, the beginning of another cycle of the Mayan calendar … or nothing at all. "I don't pay any attention to this stuff because it's bunk," says Anne Pyburn, an anthropologist at Indiana University who studies the Maya. Among followers of New Age religions, though, and particularly among those who like to celebrate the equinox at the Mayan ruin Chichen-Itza on Mexico's Yucatán peninsula, the belief that the year 2012 will mark a global transformation is widespread. In bookstores, on shelves marked "magic" or "divination," numerous volumes promote this view—and many more are on their way, from publishers as big as HarperOne and as small as Bear & Company, a New Age publisher in Rochester, Vt. Around Thanksgiving, Sony Pictures plans to release "2012." The trailer for the movie shows the oceans washing over mountains that look like the Himalayas while the face of a monk registers terror. One of the most popular authors in the 2012 category is John Major Jenkins, a self-described "independent researcher" whose 1998 book "Maya Cosmogenesis 2012" helped usher in this craze. "Around the year we call 2012," he writes, "a large chapter in human history will be coming to an end. All the values and assumptions of the previous World Age will expire, and a new phase of human growth will commence."

David Freidel is an archeologist at Washington University in St. Louis. He recently agreed to speak at a New Age conference on 2012, he says, mainly because he wanted to deprive Jenkins of the opportunity. "I immediately said yes so I could get to the podium before the charlatans do," says Freidel. He has studied the Mayan calendar (actually, calendars), and while he agrees that what's called the "long count" calendar does end in 2012, he believes that the Maya—were they still living by their ancient system of dates—would not have seen it as any kind of cataclysm. The year 2012 is nothing more than the resetting of a clock, an odometer reaching zero before it starts again, he says. Freidel accuses Jenkins and other popularizers of inventing a theology to support their view that the world is in decline—and that an external force will soon intervene to set things right. "There is a tendency," he says, "to be wholly naive on the part of individuals who want to see consciousness raised on a global scale." Jenkins defends himself against accusations that he's a fraud, saying, "Read my book, look at the bibliography."

Pyburn complains that the 2012 phenomenon makes exotics out of the Maya. "When people who have been colonized and oppressed decide they want to use their heritage to promote themselves, that's their choice. When it's being done by wealthy First-World nations, I think that's exploitative and I have a problem with it." Her Indiana University colleague Quetzil Castañeda makes a similar argument a different way. "The Maya," he says, is a Western tag for a diverse group of people who lived—and indeed still live—without any unifying language or culture. To speak of any belief as "Mayan" is like saying "all brown people are the same. We obliterate the fact that they speak 28 different languages, there are 8 million of them—today. If they're all called Maya, they must be identical." In Mexico, he adds, the real Maya think of 2012 as "a gringo invention." In America, we have always been uniquely receptive to end-times prophesy—Y2K is the most recent example. What's unique about 2012 is that it appeals not to fundamentalist Christians but to the New Age set.

Well, I did some research about this and learned some interesting facts. It turns out that astronomers predict that around the end of 2012, our planet will cross the horizontal plane that divides our galaxy bewteen north and south. This phenomenon happens every 25,000 years. Our planet and solar system travels in a sinosodial path.

The biggest question is what happens when we cross this plane. Most scientists predict that our magnetic poles will flip. This means that the compass will no longer point to north, but south instead. This will probably have devastating effects on our communications technology, as well as natural disasters such as severe weather world-wide, increased volcanic acticity, and earthquakes.

It will take our planet 7 years to cross this plane, which coincidentally matches the 7 years of "hell on earth" detailed in the book of Revelations.

Check out the link below, it shows how close we have come to this galactic central plane, in which we can see (using special filters on camers) the center of our galaxy:

Scary huh? Well, it might end up as another Y2k fear-for-nothing phenomenon. At least I hope so!

This is not that unusual, bcoz they have already flipped b4:) We studied that i think in terminale in school. It was in the section dealing with rock studies and sediments, u know when they give u rock structures and u have to analyze them? I sucked at that lol but i am pretty sure there was a whole chapter on that flipping thing and they discovered that or backed it up by the effects this had on rock formations ...so even if this happens it doesn't mean the world will end.

Default Dooms Day 122112 - 22nd June 2009

December 12 2012

2012 is sometimes claimed to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or apocalypse). Many esoteric sources interpret the completion of the thirteenth B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order. * Polar Shift is a theory that on December 21st 2012 Earth will experience earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or other natural disasters.

Accordingly, several eclectic authors claim that a major, world-changing event will take place in 2012: * The 1995 book The Mayan Prophecies linked the Maya calendar with long-period sunspot cycles. * The book 2012: Mayan Year of Destiny claims the Maya may have been instructed in their wisdom by discarnate entities from Orion and the Pleiades. Contact was maintained through shamanic rituals conducted in accordance with the movements of planets and stars. * However, Mayan priests living and working in Guatemala aver that the so-called Mayan Prophecy for 2012, as touted by various foreign New Agers who have no knowledge of Mayan culture, language, or religion, is twaddle. * The 1997 book The Bible Code claims that, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code, a meteor, asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth. * The book The Nostradamus Code speaks of a series of natural disasters caused by a comet (possibly as above) that will allow the third Antichrist to disperse his troops around the globe under the guise of aid in preparation for a possible nuclear war, although in the strictest sense it is unspecific as to nuclear war or some other natural or man caused destruction. * The book The Orion Prophecy claims that the Earth's magnetic field will reverse. * The 2005 book Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Ecstasy by Geoff Stray reviews several theories, prophecies and predictions concerning 2012 and finds where authors have used faulty information or have bent the truth to fit their theories. * The 2006 book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck discusses theories of a possible global awakening to psychic connection by the year 2012, creating a noosphere. * The 2007 book Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation into Civilization's End by Lawrence Joseph does not make any specific new predictions, but it reviews a number of 2012 predictions made by various sources, and presents arguments for the possible existence of dangerous positive feedback loops involving solar storms, Earth's magnetic field, cosmic rays, hurricanes, global warming, earthquakes, and supervolcanoes that may be on the verge of erupting.

Other prophecies and apocalyptic writings and hypotheses for this year include: * Terence McKenna's mathematical novelty theory suggests a point of singularity in which humankind will go through a great shift in consciousness. * The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, speculated that Pope Benedict XVI would reign during the beginning of the tribulation of which Jesus spoke, and sometime later a future pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", the last in this prophetic list, would appear, bringing as a result the destruction of the city of Rome and the Last Judgment. * Some proponents of a peak oil catastrophe place major events in 2012. Richard C. Duncan's book The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge claims that the Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide. Several studies predict a peak in oil production in or around 2012. [10] [11] [12] * Some alien-enthusiasts (e.g. Riley Martin), along with some new-agers, believe 2012 to correspond approximately with the return of alien "watchers" or "caretakers" who might have helped the first human civilizations with developing their technology and may have been waiting for us to reach a higher level of technological and/or social advancement. Beliefs range from the extra-terrestrials having benevolent purposes — such as to help human society evolve — to malevolent purposes — such as enslavement of mankind and/or manipulation. * There is a Hindu following indicating the appearance of an Avatar (God in human form) with God-like powers who will herald a new age. A website to this effect appears at: End of the World 2012.

So the world is gonna end cuz Mayan's Said so? And people say that in 2012 many natural disasters will happen? well many of them are already happening as a result of global warming and pollution ect... and it could only get worse. As for Hindus talking about a new GOD reincarnated in 2012 well they already have millions of those in fact every year they invent one... as for prophecies of Popes I had no idea that a pope can tell the future. As for The Return of Quetzalcoatl I'm sure that square enix is just gonna make some other Final Fantasy game with weird *** Guardian forces. As for the Bible Code well then you just gotta ask which bible is it that they are talking about. The end of he world seems to be 2010+ but there sure are many theories for 2012 what a weird coincidence HAHA.
But Anyway I'm also not optimistic about this matter, I mean it could end in 2012 why not? All I know is that we are all going down hill anyways, 2010 will be worst than 2009 and 2013 will be worse than 2012 and so on...
