Default What about the constitutional council? - 23rd May 2008

Now that a deal was reached and a new government will be formed, the first thing it must do is form a new constitutional council that will have to look into the 11 "ta3en" pending since 2005.

We now have a golden chance to PROVE to everyone that the loyalists have stolen the power since 2005.

Do you believe that this issue will lead to a first confrontation inside the new government?

The constitutional council is a must, and it is in our constitution. Be sure that the FPM ministers and MPs will never shut up about this issue.

Totally agree with you. And in some way, the destruction of our Constitutional authorities are at the origin of the current crisis.

An agreement must be found in order to reinstate the Council. But let's be pragmatic about this: let's not try to make a new crisis around this issue. Our focus must be on the 2009 elections. It is too late to (re-)start a crisis about the Baabda-Aley elections. We should focus now on winning the Baabda (and perhaps also the Aley) elections in 2009.

One we have the majority, we can make sure everything else works as it should! It's only a year away!

They will have to reach "consensus" over the constitutional council again. I think it's meaningless anyway. It will be a toy in the hands of both sides. The constitution needs to be re-written from the start.

The members of the Constitutional Council are named by the Government and the parliament (I think 5 each). This makes it impossible for this institution to be fair and independant from the executive branch, or independant at all...

As Jorje said, we need to rewrite the Constitution. The Council should be elected by other means. Perhaps by the judges themselves...

Any other suggestion?
