If destiny imposed your biological and social status it is your achievements and characters that will dictate your political leadership position. You have the advantage to rely on the history of one of the most prominent political Lebanese family and party. While the charisma of your belated brother Pierre might shadow your exposure to the Lebanese political arena, his tragic departure handed you an auspicious opportunity to continue the political evolution and the popular base expansion of the Kataeb party. Yet the torchbearer lagged behind and wasted his oil on darken side roads that dimmed the torch. IMO, your last few years of political exhibition displayed erratic scenes that mix emotions with ambitions. For example, in your letter you recognized the importance and driving force of FPM movement in liberation of Lebanon yet you selectively disagree with their involvements in Lebanese political arena after 2005! You disagree with Aouns and the MOU yet you will consider allying with FPM in the coming election! You disagree with the political line of Al-Murrs family yet you are also considering their partnership in coming election. It is a dilemma indeed when you can not decide on your own what political position you want to actively pursue to build better Lebanon where young politicians have their independent voice free from feudal grasp and mentality. The feudal phenomenon added to egotistic characters of several feudal leaders and warlords significantly drive them to eliminate non-traditional parties and leaders from having a space on political scene because it threaten to narrow their circles. Mr. Sami, the constant criticism of GMA by your political coalition at every occasion is puzzling for me to see you allying with FPM. The leadership exhibited by GMA on many occasion showed what kind of vision he possesses. If you remember back in early October 1990 when GMA called on people to surpass the artificial borders that divided them and how many sides headed that call. Yet it was smashed regional power and local warlords. That belief survived and after 15 years it was the same leader that put his ambition into reality and reaped reconciliation from a large group of Lebanese population. He also invited the rest to indulge in destroying these walls of division, prejudice and hate. Again, different regional powers and local feudal and warlords were labeling him traitor and HA puppets, same shameful qualifications that you stated in your letter to fight and abolish!! The point, Sami, is to be a leader you have to stand for what you believe in and not what you have been told to believe. Showing leadership is being in the driving seat, that is what Bachir Gemayel had accomplished in his life not because he was from Gemayels family but because he faced the rage with strong conviction and powerful will independently. A nationalistic leader and candidate for the Lebanese, not maten only, parliament should not borrow slogans that instigate the dust of prejudice but rather crafts slogans that ignite the breeze of coexistence in our country.
As for the election, I suggest that you run as an independent candidate or have your list away from FPM and others. Provide your political views and positions and get to know your constituency from all sects. People tend to elect politicians who care for their aspiration and address their concerns. Prove yourself as a leader and then FPM could establish alliance with your party. As for the coming election, FPM and you know that it is a marriage of convenience and it will end at first opportunity. This coming election is more vital than FPM having one less or more MP member. It is a battle that will shape the future of Lebanon for long time to come. Finally, do not depend on anyone to give you free ride. Free rides have some payback and in politic it could be hefty i.e. selling your beliefs and auctioning your principles. Good luck!
