Lebanon bombers wanted revenge: security official

BEIRUT (AFP) - A "terrorist" cell said to be behind three bomb attacks in Lebanon was seeking revenge for the army's victory over an extremist Islamist group last year, a security official said on Monday.

"The cell is linked to Fatah al-Islam and some of its members came from that group," the official said, referring to an Al-Qaeda-inspired militia which fought a 15-week battle last year against the army in a Palestinian refugee camp.

"So far, the army is the sole target of attacks mounted by this cell and the operations they were planning target the army and internal security forces," the official said on condition of anonymity.

He said the cell, several members of which were arrested on Sunday, was to blame for an attack on a military bus in the northern city of Tripoli on September 29, when four soldiers and three civilians were killed.

The army said an explosives belt for use in a future attack was also found during the arrest operation carried out by soldiers and internal security forces.

A search is underway for a leading member of the cell, Abdul Ghani Ali Jawhar.

The cell is also believed to be responsible for an attack in the port city in mid-August which killed 14 people, including nine soldiers and a child, and the murder of a soldier in a bomb blast in Akkar in May.

"Documents seized in two places searched by a joint force -- in Tripoli and Akkar -- show that the army and internal security forces were also their next target," he said.

The As-Safir newspaper reported that the cell was planning an attack on a Lebanese army bus and on internal security forces headquarters in Beirut.

The Lebanese army ousted Fatah al-Islam fighters from the Nahr al-Bared camp near Tripoli in September last year after 15 weeks of fighting that left 400 people dead, including 168 soldiers.

However, Fatah al-Islam chief Shaker al-Abssi managed to flee and has vowed revenge attacks against the army

اعاد الجيش اللبناني والاجهزة الامنية الطمأنينة الى نفوس اللبنانيين بعدما كثرت التفجيرات الامنية في الاونة الاخيرة موقعة الكثير من الشهداء، بحيث ضرب ضربته الحديدية من خلال القاء القبض على خلية ارهابية ضمت فلسطينيين ولبنانيين وترافق ذلك مع زيارة مدير المخابرات في الجيش العميد ادمون فاضل الى دمشق ولقائه المسؤولين السوريين، حيث تم التنسيق بين البلدين لضبط حدودهما لمواجهة الارهاب الذي يضرب لبنان وسوريا. وفي هذا الاطار، واصلت الاجهزة الامنية والعسكرية اعمالها الميدانية بحثا عن المطلوب الرئيسي المتهم بالضلوع باعمال التفجير عبد الغني علي جوهر وآخرين ولا سيما بعد اكتشاف مضبوطات في منزله في عكار على صلة بعمليات ارهابية وفي عدادها اجهزة كومبيوتر واحزمة ناسفة.

وهذا الانجاز الامني كان محور اجتماع مجلس الامن المركزي الذي انعقد بعطد ظهر اليوم في وزارة الداخلية برئاسة الوزير زياد بارود. وحتى صدور هذه النشرة كان الاجتماع لا يزال مستمرا.
حملة مداهمات: الى ذلك اكدت مصادر امنية لـ"المركزية" ان الجيش يقوم بحملة مداهمات في طرابلس وتم في خلالها دهم منزل فؤاد ديب في اسواق طرابلس واعتقال نوار العبود العقيد في المعارضة السورية مع ثلاثة اشخاص ضبط في حوزتهم اسلحة حربية واجهزة لاسلكية.

كذلك افادت المصادر ان الاجهزة الامنية هي في طور الاستحصال على مذكرة جلب من المدعي العام في طرابلس بالوكالة عمار الزين في حق الشيخ عمر بكري (بريطاني الجنسية) والذي حوكم في بريطانيا بتهمة الارهاب وابعد منها وقد جاء الى لبنان ويمارس دور السلفي التكفيري. وأفادت المصادر انه في خلال عملية المداهمات اشتبه عناصر الجيش بشخصين على دراجة نارية قرب ثكنة القبة في طرابلس وعند محاولة توقيفهما اطلق المسلحان النار على الجيش الذي رد عليهما بالمثل فاوقف احدهما وفر الآخر.

نقلت وكالة أنباء "المركزية" عن مصادر امنية أن الجيش اللبناني يقوم بحملة مداهمات في طرابلس وتم خلالها دهم منزل فؤاد ديب في اسواق طرابلس واعتقال نوار العبود العقيد في المعارضة السورية مع ثلاثة اشخاص ضبط في حوزتهم اسلحة حربية واجهزة لاسلكية.
كذلك افادت المصادر ان الاجهزة الامنية هي في طور الاستحصال على مذكرة جلب من المدعي العام في طرابلس بالوكالة عمار الزين في حق الشيخ عمر بكري.

OBM: Not only that, but the Lebanese army has a warrant for my arrest. They accuse me and 73 other brothers of forming al-Qaeda in Lebanon. Some of these brothers are in prison. However, the Lebanese security forces - who unlike the army are pro-[parliamentary majority leader Saad] Hariri - know full well that we have nothing to do with al-Qaeda and they want to cancel this warrant of arrest. Those forces in Lebanon who are close to Iran and Syria accuse us of being al-Qaeda, while those groups who are close to Saudi Arabia and the West, in particular the Hariri faction, want to exonerate us.

MA: Why do you think the Hariri faction supports people like you? Do they want to balance Hezbollah's power?

OBM: They back us because they want to secure Sunni support for their projects and activities.

MA: What are your current activities in Tripoli?

OBM: I am the director of the Iqra Islamic Trust, which is an Islamic and scientific establishment. We have a school, a college and a library for Islamic studies and research. Moreover, we run recreational programs for young Muslims. Furthermore, we stage debates in universities between Muslims and non-Muslims as part of a broader effort to invite non-Muslims to Islam. I also manage the Al-Muhajiroun branch in Beirut.

MA: You have established a Muhajiroun branch here in Lebanon?

OBM: Actually, Al-Muhajiroun operates under the auspices of the Iqra Islamic Trust.

anyway, how many can they kill , they have been in bed with thousands of killers, that eithe rone will eventually spill it all openly or if they kill them we get rid of some nasty characters.

Nawar Abboud is an ex-officer in the syrian army, he was exilted with Refaat el Assad, he is his man in Lebanon, and a member of "al foursan"
the guy was arrested, during a celebration for "al Fourssan" in Tripoli and he tried to escape but the army caught him near abou ali river.
then Refaat el Assad called Jumblat and told him that he wants Nawar free NOW! and that he is in a mission for Refaat, so Jumblat asked Hariri to set him free, so Hariri asked Mirza to let him go, so the guy is free now, he was arrested for 6 hours only.

The Muhajiroun in Afghanistan are those Arabs who emigrated there to fight the Soviets in the 1980s and stayed there... Are we talking about the same kind of Muhajiroun?
