Conflicting speeches emerged on Monday regarding the cabinet formation, as Lebanese forces leader Geagea accused Hezbollah of hindering the cabinet formation serving Iran and Syria’s interest, agreeing with the Maronite Patriarch same accusations released couple of days ago.
In a statement to AFP, LF Executive Committee Samir Geagea held Hezbollah responsible in practice for the failure to form the government, saying that it is hiding behind its ally, General Michel Aoun.
Meanwhile Ain el-Tineh sources spread a positive atmosphere, contrary to Geagea’s insinuations, assuring that the cabinet could see light by Thursday, as President Berri intensified his efforts to reach a breakthrough regarding the deadlock governing the distribution of ministerial portfolios. Nonetheless, and in what can be considered as first, Future MP Oukab Sakr supported the optimism emanating from Berri’s camp, contradicting his ally, Geagea.
Additionally, also contrary to Geagea’s position, majority sources close to PM-designate Hariri told An-Nahar daily that a positive atmosphere did suddenly occurred, specifically after a meeting was held last night in Rabieh and a contact was made with Hariri.
The newspaper reported that there is a prevailing impression that the opposition intends to facilitate the formation of the government, and if things remain on the positive side, then the government may be formed by Thursday. (Just like Ain el Tineh is predicting).
On the same context, opposition sources assured that indeed a meeting was held last night in Rabieh between General Michel Aoun and MP Suleiman Franjieh and contacts were made with PM-designate Saad Hariri, who was scheduled to meet with the political adviser to Hezbollah’s secretary general, Mr. Hussein Khalil, at his downtown Beirut residence.
Furthermore, the same opposition sources also told An-Nahar that according to the proposal conveyed by MP Suleiman Franjieh to PM-designate Hariri, General Aoun would obtain the Telecom and Energy portfolios, but Gebran Bassil would not be appointed as Telecom minister. Moreover, the FPM leader is also likely to obtain the Ministry of Tourism and a fourth portfolio, either the Displaced or Culture.
The sources were happy to announce that up to 60% to 70% of optimism was prevailing yesterday.
Meanwhile, March 14 Christians are tackling the predictions preceding the formation of the government cautiously, however, not as negatively as Geagea.
Separately, Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt called Monday for the formation of a cabinet based on consensus rather than unreasonable demands, adding that further delays in the formation process could lead to political and security instability.
Finally, sources close to PM-Designate Hariri did not deny these positive facts but rather confirmed most of them, although they remained cautious and abstained from making any comments on the issue, merely saying, “Contacts are ongoing, and we will not delve into the details.”
