That's a controversial question; it depends from which angle you look at it.

If you strap your body with bombs, or kidnap planes and crash them into buildings, you're the lowest terrorist/scum on the earth.

But for Bin Laden and his entourage, then you're a martyr.

Some people call martyr's people who died fighting for their country.

Other people call martyr's anybody who got killed in their country.

If you look up "martyr" on dictionary.com, this is the answer you will get:

a martyr is a person who dies for a really sacred matter ...maybe religion, love for his country....but this matter must be sacred and serves the public benefit not a personal one.

A martyr is a person who dies for A Cause he believed in ... who died defending his beliefs .... either on the battle field or on the political field .. .

I think you can only define martyr subjectively. A martyr who died defending Lebanon from israel or syria is certainly not a martyr in the eyes of these countries.

How is it subjective ???
Anyone who dies defending his cause is a martyr for the peopel who believe in that Cause ... You dont need to get emotional to believe in One Cause .. Defending Lebanon is a Sacred Cause and Any Lebanese who died defending it is a Martyr whether against Israel or Syria ..

Bach I completely agree with what you said,
you didn't read carefully what i said, i said these people are not considered martyrs in the eyes of syria or israel, they are considered ennemy combattants.

this is exactly what I meant by subjectively, meaning that you can only defind martyrdom through the eyes of people who support the actions of the martyr in question; it's not objective like 1+1=2 (not universally accepted by all people whoever they are).
