finally, fadlallah and the shia are not in support of the majority rule nor the federalism, while the sunnis are ARDENT SUPPORTERS OF MAJORITY RULES.

Ya khayyeh, why do we keep on arguing? I gave the solution: base the federal system on sex and give the people the freedom of choice to belong to one State or the other.

You will see that for once we will find ourselves united on an issue with no differences between us: we all are for sex! We will all (99% maybe) find ourselves in the same State within that federal system.

It's all who like sex against all who don't... in unity, here we come!

Nice concept but not one practical realistic solution to reach it. Throwing theories just for the heck of it...how productive!

Here lie a few problems:

- the actual intercrossing of the sects which makes it hard to divide the states based on sects

- the small size of the entire country and the few facilities it contains (the airport will be in one state, the major ports in another, the agriculture fields in another, etc....)

- the agreement (or rather the lack of) on the federal institutions (central government, the president). Here, we will have to deal with the authorities given to the president, the sectarian division of the central government (50/50 or 1/3 1/3 1/3 or something else) and its authority over each state.

- the federal laws vs the state laws and which supersede which, with whom to determine so. That alone can rip the federation apart. Even in the US, such issues cause nationwide attention.

- the connection and commuting between the states. If the division is on sectarian basis, will the christian states allow the muslim citizens to enter each day to their areas to work and vice versa?

- how will the states coordinate with each other if for some reason the central government falls? Looking at the geography of Lebanon, one state could even make another starve by putting an embargo. That's a major power card for one state to hold. As well, with one airport, one state has full power over the tourism business. It has the ability to cripple the country's economy and might even lead to the bankruptcy of the entire federal system since tourism is our major source of income.

- How will the debt be dealt with? Will each state have a certain (different depending on the state) annual fee to pay to cover it? or do all the states pay equally? if so, would it be fair? would the economic strength of each state be taken in consideration when dealing with this?

- since the aim of the federal system is sectarian, what will happen to the minorities in each state? for example, what will happen to the shiites in Mount Lebanon? they can't be kept there since in a decade or so, they will outnumber the christians due to their high birth rate, so expel them or down right massacre? With the likes of some christian leaders, the second option is more feasible. Hence, wouldn't this risk outright war with the shiite dominated state? And what about the druze who are the weakest players in the federal system? Will they accept to be challenged even further by a sizable christian population in their own state? and many many more.

federalism have nothing to do with education. it will add competition to do better. it will add a relaxing attitiude between communities. because they will not feel in danger!
if one converts we can get him an immigration to canada!!!
states based on community is the solution!! it happened sect and community are the same in this part of the world..
by the way the christian community is composed of several sects...
who do you mean by "WE" ?
speak for yourself and deduce any conclusions you want.

Europe is united dude, they went from kingdoms and states and feudal, to coutnries and now to united Europe ... for its survival.

North America has so many trade agreements etc etc

and in Lebanon, a country tiny like ... you want to divide it more? based on sects? middle age thinking ..
how will you deal with federal and state police? war with Israel ? etc

Lebanese are getting more and more narrow minded and even fighting for it !!!

don't get pissed off ... fascism ain't new in this country. but don't worry, this religious based supremacist idea exist only in few minds, but never will be implemented in an actual political system... never again.

when 50% of deputies are christians, it doesn't mean that the christians are going to elect 50% of the deputies.

the other way around would be :

when 50% of lebanese are women, it doesn't mean that the parliament will have 50% female deputies

when 50% of lebanese are under 30, it doesn't mean that the parliament will have 50% of young deputies

when
etc etc...
