A secular government would be the best solution and protection for Christians and all minorities, including Shiites. However, practical measures need to be adopted before a context that is suitable and where something like this could be adopted must be created. If we're to remain with this sectarian system it's a deadlock, the President's prerogatives must return to pre-taif, Lebanon is a ship with no captain and I blame this precisely on the greed of those who created this situation. Let's face it, if any of those who agreed to taif were more concerned with the well being of Lebanon rather than their own standing they would have simply accepted a strong Christian President but asked for the 50/50 Parliament. Look, Lebanon's "Paris of the Middle East" days were a result of a certain policy the government followed for years, call it what you want, but it worked. There were flaws, they could have been fixed but the fundamentals shouldn't have changed and this is a result of greed.

Either give the President more power or remove the entire system and get the religious fanatics out of the country.

Hear hear !!!

Some people here are mixing president with maronite....

When we're asking for more power to the president, we're asking for more power to the position whoever occupies it, even if it's a sunnite, a shiite or a jew

Before we have a non-secular election law I believe no one should be given more powers, not the president not anyone else. Now assuming we get such an election law, I believe then the power should be in the hands of the president and he should not necessarily be a Christian.

Think of him as a First Lieutenant turned pirate.

There's no contradiction unless you think a pirate should replace a captain.
