Could it be because oil companies might have financed the elections and now they are paying them back?

The Daily StarBEIRUT: The sharp fluctuation of oil prices in the international markets are taking their toll on Lebanese consumers as prices of gasoline, kerosene and gasoil climbed unchecked for the fourth week in a row. In less than one month, prices of 20 liters of gasoline rose by an average of LL3,000 to reach LL31,800 for 98 octane and LL31,100 for 95 octane.

Prices of gasoil, fuel oil and kerosene also rose accordingly.

"Why should the prices climb in this pattern? There is no ceiling for the prices of gasoline and gasoil in Lebanon," Zuhair Berro, the president of Consumer Lebanon, told The Daily Star.

He warned that the rise in the prices of oil and its derivatives will definitely affect all consumer products, starting from bread and all the way to the monthly subscription in the private generators.

Lebanese manufacturers who heavily depend on energy to operate their factories are also among the victims of the rise in the prices of oil.

Some industrialists complain that energy represents nearly 30 percent of their entire costs each year.

"We don't have a new study on the price index. But I am sure our next findings will show a rise in the prices of commodities as a result of the high rates of gasoline and kerosene," Berro said.

The caretaker government of Premier Fouad Siniora in theory cannot take any action to end the rise in the prices of gasoline unless a new cabinet is formed by the designated prime minister.

"The government collects LL12,500 from each 20 liters of gasoline and I don't think the government will abandon this tax for the time being," Bahij Abou Hamzeh, the president of the oil-importing companies association, told The Daily Star.

He added that in the past the government suspended all taxes on gasoline to alleviate the pressure on consumers. "If the government freezes the taxes and value added tax, the price of 20 liters of gasoline will not exceed LL18,000," Abou Hamzeh said.

According to the Finance Ministry, the government's revenues from taxes on oil and gas are more than $700 million a year.

Officials say this type of tax is very crucial at this stage especially if "we takes into consideration that the government has not increased taxes in the 2009 budget."

Consumer groups and trade union fear the prices of commodities will rise to alarming levels in a few weeks if the government fails to put a ceiling for gasoline and gas oil.

The General Labor Confederation warned in a statement Wednesday that the rise in the rise in the prices of oil "will burn the country."

"Very few people respond to the trade unions' calls for demonstrations or strikes. It seems that they [Lebanese] are too engrossed into politics," he said.

Berro quipped that if all the money that was spent on the polls had gone to subsidize the cost of gasoline and kerosene then the Lebanese would have been better off than with empty promises from deputies.

but i guess the number 31200 was all i asked for

so anyway that means 19000 taxes
which include TVA: 3000
what's the rest of the 16000 for?
this is a good question.
did you hear of the guy that invested in a beach.
he posted... access for only 5 LPs....
so nobody entered.
then he posted.... free access.
everybody entered.
then he posted....... exit for only 5 LPs.

our beloved govt is trying to balance the losses met by EDL.
as it has no control over the areas where the theft is taking place, (60% mainly in the south and bekaa)...
it had to hunt somewhere else.

this somewhere else are the petrol pumps.
even hassan nasrallah can not avoid paying the tax in this case.

and we... the poor citizens are paying the price.
clear?.

Quite an authoritative answer... Would you back that 60% figure with some kind of a reference? Anything printed could do.

Now, for a reference on EDL losses, the figures for 2006 show 758 Million USD as per the below report, page 49 - point 4.5.

http://siteresources.worldbank.org/I...tricityPER.pdf

Page 23, point 2.13 shows non-billed consumption at 150 Million USD for 2007, let's assume for the sake of argument the same figure for 2006.

While we all agree that non-billed consumption should be addressed and solved, what is the government doing for the remaining 608 Million dollars in losses?

i once read an article how people in tripoli ( bab al tabannet ) were in support of higher tva ( trying to support sosuosu at that time) because accoring to the adam smith if thet world, a higher tva means people will import less stuff hence the people will have more discretionary money to spend in lebanon..
