Fires breaking out in Lebanon

• At least 200 Civil Defense posts were mobilized to help put out the blazes which broke out overnight.

• Police reported no casualties from the fires which destroyed vast areas of forests and land in north and south Lebanon as well as in the Chouf Mountains.

• Firefighters on Tuesday were battling major fires that broke out in different parts of Lebanon, with flames reaching some houses and a school in Hasbaya.

• Fires now were creeping toward the ancient Moussa Castle in Beit Eddine in the Chouf Mountains.

El tahit bato msaleh btin3aro. chouf, beit el deen keserwan, dahyeh, beirut is still part of our country, if a fire erupts in any part we should all be concerned.

Ofcourse I would prefere if these fires will get rid of some politicians

تحاصر الحرائق بلدة دير القمر الشوفية وتقترب من قصر موسى وقد سجلت اكثر من 50 حالة اغماء. وأفاد شهود عيان أن الحرائق بدأت بعد ظهر أمسفي أحراج دير القمر السفلى لكنها لم تخمد كليا، وأدت الرياح الى تأجيجها ونقلها من مكان الى آخر. ورجّح بعد سكان دير القمر امكانية أن يكون هذا الحريق مفتعلاً.

تمّ اخلاء دير مار عبدا في دير القمر بسبب تمدد الحرائق الهائلة التي تجتاح المنطقة واستنفار في مراكز الدفاع المدني كافة بعد انتشار الحرائق في كل لبنان.

والجيش والدفاع المدني اخمدا حريقا كبيرا في الكفير - حاصبيا

وطنية- 2/10/2007 (امن) افاد مندوب "الوكالة الوطنية للاعلام" في عكار منذر المرعبي ان ألسنة النيران ما تزال تتصاعد من احراج عندقت - القبيات ملتهمة مساحات شاسعة من احراج الصنوبر والسنديان، وتواصلت طوافات الجيش والدفاع المدني والقوى الامنية والاهالي عمليات الاطفاء ومحاصرة الحريق، ولم تنجح حتى الساعة عملية الاطفاء لشدة الرياح وارتفاع الحرارة فضلا عن عدم تمكن سيارات الاطفاء من وصول خراطيمها الى المكان لوعورة الطريق.

وقد ناشد الاهالي تكثيف الجهود لعملية اطفاء الحرائق معربين عن اسفهم للكارثة البيئية الكبيرة التي ألمت بأحراجهم، مطالبين بالكشف عن الفاعلين الذين يعبثون بالطبيعة وبالبيئة.

كما أفاد مندوب "الوكالة الوطنية للاعلام" في الشوف عامر زين الدين ان حرائق عدة شبت منتصف ليل امس في محيط بلدة دير القمر في الشوف، وقد لامست النيران بعض المنازل فاحترق جزء من منزل عائد للعميد جان ناصيف، فيما تعمل وحدات من الجيش وقوى الامن والدفاع المدني على اخماد الحرائق، ولكنها لم تفلح بسبب ضخامة النيران وسرعة الرياح.

حاصبيا
كما أفادنا مندوبنا في حاصبيا ان قوة من الجيش والدفاع المدني تمكنت من محاصرة النيران التي شبت فجر اليوم في محيط بلدة الكفير - قضاء حاصبيا، وهي ما زالت تعمل بمساعدة الاهالي لمحاصرتها واخمادها بعد ان قضت على آلاف الاشجار الحرجية والمثمرة، كما تم اخلاء المنازل التي تقع في اطار هذه النيران من سكانها.

Forest fires rage in Lebanon, cause unclear

BEIRUT, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Forest fires blazed in several parts of Lebanon on Tuesday, including the vicinity of the ancient town of Deir al-Qamar southeast of Beirut, civil defence and security sources said.

"An environmental disaster has hit Deir al-Qamar. The fires have reached homes and now they're putting out the fires there," the town's deputy governor told Voice of Lebanon radio.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Television footage showed several burned-out cars on roads in the Shouf region, which includes the Christian town of Deir al-Qamar, as well as smoke billowing from charred woodland.

Big forest fires were also reported in the northern region of Akkar, and smaller ones in the Metn area northeast of Beirut.

"Seven or eight fires erupted overnight and it may be that heavy winds fanned them," a security source said.

It was not clear how the fires had started.

The army was using helicopters to spray water over the blazes.
