TRIPOLI, Lebanon - Lebanese security officials say the toll from the morning rush hour bombing of a bus carrying civilians and members of the military in the northern city of Tripoli has now risen to 18 killed and 40 wounded.
The officials say the dead included 10 off-duty soldiers. The blast occurred Wednesday morning when a roadside bomb went off on a busy main street of Tripoli as a public bus drove by.
It raised suspicions that al-Qaida-inspired Islamic militants may have sought revenge on the military for last year's fatal clashes.
But local media also link the bombing to tensions ahead of a visit later Wednesday by Lebanese president to Syria to patch up stormy relations between the neighbors. - AP

Explosion in Tripoli: discussions and analysis -
13th August 2008
It is rather pathetic to hear the politicians comment on roadside bomb in Tripoli earlier today. Not a single one of them, with the exception of a few FPM deputies, raised the issue of religious extremism festering in Tripoli, and they all worked hard to present today's tragic event as being a continuation of the opposition/loyalists struggle.
Even though the investigation is far from over, but it is rather obvious that the style in which this incident was carried out has the finger prints of al-qaida all over it; based on the style and the way the bomb was packed.
How come no ahdab, fatfat, wa man laffa laffahum, are not even exploring that possibility? dealing with al-qaida requires a completely different strategy than dealing with an internal political struggle, and if we refuse to acknowledge the extremists theory from the get go, how do they expect to put together an effective strategy to counter these issues a bit further down the road?
11:26am Al-Sharq radio: Bank employee Khaled Jaddar, who had just parked his car on the side of the road when the bomb exploded, said the blast went off at 7:50 am.
