Default Echos of the Sunni Street - 11th May 2008

First, let it be clear that this is about the Sunni street in Beirut and Lebanon in general. In the sectarian composition of Lebanon, there are of course those who support Omar Karami or Usama Saad, similarly to those Shiites/Christians/Druzes that support other than the principally recognized representatives of their sects (Hezbollah/FPM/PSP).

The Sunni street is generally represented by the Future Movement. That movement was dealt a severe blow through military force in Beirut and other regions and it is time to realize the repercussions on the community that principally feels represented by that political group.
  • What is the current state of mind of the Sunnis in Beirut and Lebanon?

Are they feeling somewhat of a "defeat"?

Are they perceiving Hezbollah/Amal's military display as a victory for Shiites?

What kind of reaction can one expect from them next?

What will be their perception of Hezbollah/Amal in the future and how hard will it be to fix what has happened over the past few days?

Additional questions and related feedback much appreciated..

Regards

And I would really appreciate it if we do not politicize this discussion... It is not far fetched to say that many Sunnis are currently traumatized in a way similar to how the Shiite community was during Israel's invasion of 2006 for example...

I don't think that your comment is very constructive lc, and I believe that there are interesting opinions to be heard on this topic and on this very same forum.

Thank you

I didn't mean offense with my comment. I meant that the reaction of the Sunni street is obvious if you go to places where sunnis are talking. It's calls to arms, retribution and a need for more radical parties to represent the sunnis. You can go see that by yourself.

That's one way to look at it, that's the extreme side of some... I would like to hear opinions over here if possible (and people really don't need to state their sect/religion or whatever, please - just indicate your opinion and what have you been observing around you)

Thanks

as IF it is not obvious that each party is calling for the death of the others.
Accept the defeat and turn against their leaders ??

In LEbanon, people only split from a party to form another party more radical.

If people split from Future, it is to join the wahabi groups

Hey Dry Ice

U made my day, as your comparaison is quite real and it reflects what has truly happened and is happening these days, as YES Hezb is acting as if Israel was occupying Beirut.

YES Hezb is acting as really it was fighting Israel on Lebanon Land.

YES Hezb feels as if they have freed an occupied territory from the Israely occupation.

What do u expect from the Sunni to feel towards Hezb now?

Of course they should fel hate becoz Hezb is labling them of being Israelies agents, like the Syrians use to do with the FPM during the Syrian occupation, they use to lable them Israelies in order to give an excuse to the horrible things they use to do to the FLer, Kataeb and FPMers.

The Sunnis should feel anger and want revange and this is very dangerous for Lebanon.

Something should be done quickly to avoid to the country a big and endless war.
