The Free Patriotic Movement hit back on Sunday at Mount Lebanon Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Ali Jouzou for strongly criticizing Gen. Michel Aoun, calling him an enemy of the Maronite church, the President and Lebanon's Sunnis.
In a statement issued late Sunday, the FPM warned to take Jouzou to court if he continued his campaign against the former army general.
"Under the cloak and turban, and from a religious position, Mount Lebanon Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Ali Jouzou, periodically launches stances that carry a grudge against the Free Patriotic Movement and its leader Gen. Michel Aoun," the statement said.
It accused Jouzou of sparing no effort to "incite sectarianism and factionalism."
"With all due respect to religious symbols, we will not allow him or people like him to use their religious position to harm people's dignities, distort facts and spread rumors," the FPM statement cautioned.
"Either he willingly stops this campaign and apologizes, or let the religious leadership or his political authority under sheik Saad Hariri, whom we blame for what is happening, put an end to it," warned the statement
