Man,
civil marriage is against christian beliefs and against christian dogmas.
Any priest who would support civil marriage will be demoted by the vatican.
He's either a priest or a politician, he can't be both.....

We, Lebanese are sometimes funny in how we take rules to the extreme, and then we make it our job to ensure the rule is implemented to the dot! like the Jews when they were told not to do any work on Saturday, they made it their job to attack anyone who sneezes on a Saturday.
We fight feodalism, but if a chiaa with a family name Aoun gets a high position in FPM, we raise hell!!

Yes,
we Lebanese are hilarious when we use arguments in our advantage, then use the same arguments against our opponents.
We're not talking here about a Aoun who is not related to Michel Aoun, we're talking about a man of god interfering in politics.
This is against FPM's beliefs and principles.

We fight for splitting religion and politics, but if a priest runs for elections, we raise hell! That's not religion interfering in politics... religion interfereing in politics is when a clergy in a POWERFUL POSITION, and who is elected in Rome, uses his power and his voice to influence politics.
|
Now you just invented a new argument: The powerful position thingy.
May he be in a powerful position or not, the guy is still a priest and having him in our political life is NOT splitting religion from politics, it's actually the contrary.
Tayyar.org was attacking a cheikh in the south for thinking of presenting himself as a candidate.
The FPM has always attacked the patriarch, telling him that the clergy shouldn't have a say in our political life. Let him pray and let us take the decisions.
Not to forget that a priest has a moral obligation towards the people and when he'll be seen as supporting a certain party, people will follow: THAT'S CALLED USING HIS VOICE TO INFLUENCE PEOPLE.

But if the people decide to vote for a priest to represent their riding.. so what?? Even here in Canada, where you have the best example of a secular system, i worked with a church minister who ran for an MP position, and he won... by muslim votes in his riding... we are for a secular system, but let's not get to an*l about it.
|
Well here in Canada, the system is already secular, it's been that way since the 1960s (at least in Quebec).
The last time Msgr Turcotte (Québec's higher religious authority) tried to interfere in politics he was quickly dismissed.
The only priest who ran in the elections was given a choice by the church: Either your electors or your flock. He chose the latter.
This is how it should work and this is how it should be.
People are inventing all sorts of reasons to justify a priest's candidacy.
Sometimes I really think I'm talking to LFers who now are making Michel el Murr or Walid Joumblatt look like acceptable guys just because they allied with them eventhough before that they were complete craps....
