For me also important development. Linux is much more friendly for developers.
Video editing also i am doing this days on Linux, because all of windows software or crappy, or too expensive.

I don't use pirated software anymore, i don't want to be a thief. Most of nice software that people like to use, i notice, pirated. And they are not ready to pay for it.

thank you for this thread,
i'm using ubuntu 9.04 (and upgrading it right now)
it boots up much faster than windows, i don't worry about viruses and it has great forums for self-help.

it's good to know this :
-anyone who uses the pc for browsing the web, msn and writing some docs, ubuntu is a better.
-anyone who has an old laptop and xp is running too slow on it, ubuntu is much better in this case.
-anyone who has a small netbook, ubuntu netbook remix is faster and is optimised to fully use the small screen.

so check it up.

I switch even my boss to Linux. And he is not on old hardware or netbook :-)

While boss had Windows, he asked frequently to fix some problem, cause catching trojans and viruses, at the end, after 1-3 month system was becoming overbloated by spyware and adware, overbloated registry, and slow. It became slow also because antivirus programs require more and more resources. He needs to reinstall Windows again and again.
At friday he say for me - really i like Linux, it is trouble free completely.

Hey,
I have been using linux for the last 5 years.

I have started with suse and now i am using ubuntu 9.10.

The only problem i have with ubuntu is when i want to use adobe products.
I am a web developer and use PHP/MySQL mostly.

For drivers: Usually ubuntu recognizes most drivers instantly even for nvidia. (usually ubuntu works best on intel products)
For softwares: There is always a replacement product. (sometimes better)
- Open office for Microsoft word
- Amarok, Rythmbox for Windows Media player
- Pidgin ,,, for MSN
...
All of them have wonderful support also.

If you want to switch for linux and have any problems/questions, ask me and i would help if you want.

Jo

I must disagree.

Windows is more user friendly. It is simple and if you want to browse and chat, then windows is the way to go. I am stating facts. Windows sucks when it comes to more complicated tasks ( Mac for graphics .. Linux for Networking and dev... etc..)

I cant think of anything that would make me switch to linux if I tend to use the PC for multimedia ( mp3s, pics, videos..games.) or to use Microsoft Office..

There is no standards or objective tests. Each "review" i seen is not neutral, and or paid my M$, or done by Linux or M$ "maniacs". Everything depends on the habits and subjective opinion.

I will do a really transparent test soon.
I have 4 year old daughther. She is russian-talking. She never try seriously to work on computer(only few times, and thats was fun, a bit Linux, a bit Windows), and i am going to buy for her computer soon.
I will give her english Windows Vista and Ubuntu and will try to teach how to launch games and movies.
And i will ask, which system she likes more. I guess it will be really objective test, than one done by old, brain-boned "reviewers".

Yeah but I can't imagine my sister using the cli or makeinstall or iptables or compiling the kernel.. sometimes with linux, you really need to understand what you are doing unless you want to spend your time reading the README or HOWTO.. I know you can install .deb packages but still not as easy as Windows. As you stated nuclearcat, it is subjective. But honestly, for beginners, Windows is easier.

And .deb is MUCH easier than Windows.
Windows with their "each one different flavor" setup.exe, install.exe, setup.msi, is total hassle. Especially when it asks for reboot, when reboot is really not required.
I don't talk that uninstalling them leaves a lot of garbage in system.
