God... we are still waiting using GSM...who cares about WiMax ?

We need a freaking upgrade to 3G.. Our phones have too many features that most of it do not work in Lebanon... HSDPA is one of it.

But again, paying 80$ for a 1mbps dsl connection at home means on mobile network it should be like 4 times more....

WiMax is just "Wifi on steroids". Same COFDM (ok better thing - there is OFDMA, but it makes base and CPE more expensive, needs precise oscillator and RF part), same 64QAM max, just a bit less spectrum size, more control for base stations, and more power.

Exactly... we're still stuck with GSM and limited overpriced ADSL connection, I don't know about the Minister's move, it seems illogical. I am currently in an "unheard of" country in southern Africa, and using HSDPA on my phone, and we're still excited about EDGE in Beirut. Few months ago Syria was implementing 7.2Mbps HSDPA. All we're doing is fighting about politics, it seems we forgot during all those years the world has moved to a better technological level, we still think we're the most advanced country... wlak in a country b7ayete mich seme3 fiya abel may2ouloule la eje 3laya, most of the capital mich mzafte w 3 operators 3indon HSDPA

As for the mobile features, imagine google maps with gps positioning on your mobile

Its pathetic how technologically we are behind most countries.
Finland has put internet access as a civil right. Koreans are gearing up for 1 Gbps connection. Most countries are enjoying speeds up to 100 mbps with incredibly low latencies.
In Lebanon, we're still struggling to provide decent DSL connection with reasonable prices, low latencies and better upload speeds. Instead, we're bickering around like children who will take which seat. Akh 3ala waja3 hal rass......

u got it all wrong as nuclearcat said... our network infrastructure is good and can be better but our international bandwidth is the issue.

There has been some talks around about a trial 3G network. But not before our 2G networks are optimized fully. 3G with HSPA technology can offer up to 7.2mpbs, and it has proven to be better than WiMax. LTE, or what you call 4G, has been tested and installed in some countries, and the results where satisfying. and we're still suffering with our 2G network....

As someone mentioned, it is useless to have a high speed infrastructure while the country's bandwidth capabilities are very limited. People in Europe, USA, and others are getting an Internet speed faster than our total country bandwidth (that might be exaggerated but not by much)

EDIT: a proof for WiMax failure... Look at the telecom vendors, Ericsson/NSN/... adopted 3G and successors, while Motorola (or was is Alcatel Lucient?) invested heavily in WiMax, we hardly hear about them now in the telecom market
I think at least i know that regarding Beirut area the WiMax network that is operational and under testing is using an independent structure then the current GSM Operators. which loose the whole purpose of creating a new infrastructure to offer this service instead of upgrading the current ones.

Agreed!! for example.. look at the Nokia N97.. it was made specifically for Online programs and update tracking.. but in Lebanon.. it's Online potentialities are ruined.

and Yes we need 3G in this country.. look at Europe and the rest of the world.. most countries have 3.75G and 4G isn't far from being Used. and look at us.. 2.75G(is it even used here?) .. overpriced.. Over limited.. Unstable...

But first's thing's first.. We need more Bandwidth in this country if we are to benefit from new technologies.. when will that happen.. it's hard to say :/
