i dont think game publishers are gonna make games any cheaper.

they will just try to control more where and how their games get distributed.

in essence, i suppose they will focus more and more on consoles that are a pain in the neck to bypass.

for instance, the PS3 is setting a precedent with its resilence to the hacking/pirating community.

the way things are going, pc games which are the most easily cracked might notice a bigger decline in AAA titles worse than what we are experiencing now.

only RTS games are safe for the pc platform, for now.

but who knows, only time will tell what happens.

but i seriously doubt ever seeing any new original game being sold at 5$ 10$ 15$..

but for now, the online gaming pirates are still busy. and third world countries that can barely afford a loaf of decent bread are not the main concern of game publishers, it's the 'rich' white kids and geeks of the west that are not paying for their games that are costing the publishers the bulk of their money.
I see a decline in pc game prices when online game distribution will outweigh retail. When that happens, the subsequent lowering of prices of the digitally distributed games is direct result of the tipping of the scales, because digital distribution will matter most in sales and not retail, thus creating competition leading to a price drop. Well, you can say that we have competition now and that there have never been price drops. Well, you must take into consideration, that base expenditure in distributing games online is far lower than retail, thus giving it justification by exerting higher profits by lowering prices that will yielding to more sales, than by retail which will lead lower profits and a higher profits/expenditure margin than online distribution.

we will see with time i guess.

but i'm not certain of anything anymore, the gaming industry is bordering on the twilight zone and there are some things i cannot possibly understand, how like that useless messed up PC PORT of GTA4 sold so well..

i just don't know anything anymore

I read somewhere that some gaming companies are considering distributing their games for free, but what they are going to do is run some ads throughout the game (ie between levels and so on) . according to their calculations, revenues from ads can easily recover sales revenues.

There already are games which boast ads, yet the price hasn't lowered.

The cost of any software application is determined by the work that goes into design, graphics, and coding(including development and beta testing). For larger software houses there also has to be enough profit to pay the rent and staff until the next game can be delivered.

This cost is not able to be mitigated. Additional cost to consumers is added by a publisher though, and this is where the dynamic changes. Publishers pay development houses for the right to publish and market the software, and this is why digital downloads can be cheaper than buying a boxed copy...tariffs also effect the end price to consumers abroad.

All software companies complain about pirates. Needlessly, since for the most part pirates will pirate, and paying customers pay. But paying customers will only buy games that interest them, while pirates will pirate everything so it looks like there is more loss from piracy than it may seem like on the surface.

A couple more things not always apparent; The stated losses due to piracy are not actually losses, they are missed revenue from piracy but don't really buy games so cannot be considered as lost revenue. The monetary figures you see in reports on piracy are therefore seriously flawed.
