so of course not. there are 3G plans exclusive for the iphone available only in 22 countries (US, canada,Germany, France, UK,...) where the iphone was released officially.

but pay attention, the new ones are not unlockable yet, so in the mean time, you can only get the 3G iphone if you sign for one of the 3G iphone plans.

iphone was sold out in our area which I guess is a good thing because there are rumours that the unlocking software is almost out, but still the main problem or obstacle is how to get out an apple store without signing a contract?

as for the contract, I know at least for canada, you will not be allowed to walk out of an apple, fido, or robbers store with an iphone without signing some hefty contract. (you have the option of breaking the contract by paying $400 after the first month bill has been paid).

good news for the first generation (2G) iphone owners:

you can update the software to the 2.0 version. please be careful and follow the exact instructions given by the developers.

PS: until now, you can only update if you have a mac; I guess the windows verion should be released pretty soon.

The 2.0 will be available for WINDOW users soon.. it is just the method is somehow sofisticated so as Shevchenco said, just be careful updating it.

Few are saying that you might encounter APP crash, since they will release app exlusevely for the 2.0.

On a side note, many are reporting that this method can jailbreak the 3G but yet not able to unlock it (still not confirmed)
