Why not get a 9600gt? According to this Hierarchy it places the 9600gt above the 3850. | ya, becuz u got an lga mobo with pci-e (965)
i got me the last of the late and great 875 agp mobos. (gigabyte hehe)
the ati 3850 agp is the best i can get without changing mobos. | | | | | Registered Member

my rams are at full 400mhz in dual channel, and my gigabyte mobo is/was a beast for tweaking and overclocking (i got two bios btw hehe).
already my specs with my gf7600gs are faster than urs, add an ati 3850 and voila !! sparkles for a single core system.
the agp bus is fast enough for the ati 3800 series, u need a pci-e bus only for a gf8800 and upwards.
the only issue i might have is the cpu bottlenecking in some games, but until now, that was never an issue, i just turn down 'physics' in games and i have no bottlenecks. i'm talking from my experience, i just need to get that ati 3850 video card for now and i'm cool :)
ofcourse i could always use a newer system, but like u, i am clinging on to my current system, which for me still has some sexiness in it. | | | | | Orange Room Supporter

| Yeah i never said that my desktop was better than yours, it may be only in the ram department. But the point im trying to make is that it would imo not wise to get a an agp vga now and be forced at a later time to get rid of the system all together including the newly bought card cause because of the outdated rams and cpu. Dish out and get a new mobo, vga, cpu and rams, instead of getting the card and having to replace it at a much sooner time in contrast to having bought the new parts. And if light on cash, you can keep with the cpu, and vga, those will let you play future releases on low settings, and just content yourself with a new mobo and rams, until you have enough money to upgrade the rest of the lot. | | | | | Orange Room Supporter

(u already got a wider upgrade path, i don't for this system which is still good for me)
the idea here is to keep a useful system and only upgrade it for need be purposes.
if i needed to get a new system, i would get a new system regardless. that will eventually happen.
so as i said, that's not the idea.
between a new weak pc and an old good pc i will keep the old pc.
for instance, i would be stupid to switch my current specs to anything less than a core 2 duo at 3.0 with 4 gb and an ati 4870..
for now, my system can run games well, no need to upgrade.
all games ran well, even crysis and even on my 7600gs (which needs to just die now hehe).
when it's really useless, i get another good one.
i try not to buy weak pc stuff. i can't stand them near me hehe
i got in my hands right now the new Prince of Persia 2008 and it's already running fine at medium details on my old-skool pc even with the gf7600 still not replaced.
i hope u got my particular point here hehe | | | | | Registered Member

| Understood, just take into consideration that you can keep your current hardware on a new mobo; that can be later outfitted with new everythings, got my point? ;) | | | | | Orange Room Supporter

now, why are we discussing my upgrade options in length again in an rts thread ?
