Default Nvidia Defective Architecture! - 14th August 2008

It appears that Nvidia’s notebook chips aren’t the only ones that could be defective, if an Inquirer report is to be believed.

ZoomAccording to sources, the entire line of G84 and G86 chips all suffer from the same defect, regardless of desktop or notebook application. The chip generation utilizes the same Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), which supposedly has an issue with an “unnamed substrate or bumping material, and it is heat related.”

As expected, Nvidia is staying mum on the topic, but analysts are spilling various details. One story is that HP was the recipient for the majority of the defective chips – only limited to a specific batch. Further explanation reveals that it was isolated to an end-of-life batch that used a different bonding/substrate process.

The story with HP didn’t fly with the Inq, as it believes that no changes in process were made throughout the chip’s cycle, leading to suspicions that the defect is widespread. Furthermore, Dell responded quickly to failure reports by quickly issuing a BIOS update that pumped up the cooling for the vulnerable chip parts, which clearly shows that the problem ventured beyond just HP. Now HP has also a new BIOS to run the fan at all times at the expense of battery life.

While evidence may point to only notebook chips being afflicted, one theory is that notebook chips go though more stress than their desktop counterparts. Notebooks are power cycled more often, and by extension the GPUs go through more heat cycles – quickly exposing the defect. GPUs in notebooks may also be harder to cool, with less space for elaborate heatsinks and fans.

Unfortunately for owners of Nvidia G84 and G86 hardware, this could just be the tip of a very troubled iceberg.

So guyz, when buying a laptop stay clear of any sporting geforce8400's and 8600's. As im already noticing some system crashes when playing heavy duty games....basicly i got screwed.

nothing less then 2GB RAM & a powerful NVidia 8 series VGA card, reminding you that whatever you get now, it will be outdated in 6 months, it sucks, i know

LOL!

Don't forget to add a very fast hard disk. I think Sata 2 type drives are the latest, but I could be wrong. Sata 3 may have just come out. But dont get less than 10,000 rpm.

Man, with such a ninja ******* computer, I think it will run great for the upcoming titles like Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Total War Empire, and Fallout 3.

It kinda depends on ur budget.

But if u would take my word for it, i would suggest to save your the money, wait till CoreI7 comes out. When it does DDR3 prices would have fallen, as will the x48 chipset, and a new generation nvidia geforce would be marketed thus devaluing the 280gtx, and thats one strong gpu. Just wait till November, thats my advice.

The most important thing to remember is to get the newest mobo around, even if it will cost you. That way ull have a chance 2 years on to upgrade some of ur components.

"Nvidia Expanding for Intel Core i7

Nvidia nvidia is furthering its support for Intel intel ’s coming Core i7 processor line while it is preparing the announcement of its next generation of integrated graphics Graphics processing unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .

The announcement will back Nvidia’s efforts to expand offerings into Intel’s upcoming high-end desktop platform. Previously referred to as “Bloomfield”, now named Core i7. Nvidia had mentioned that is has no intentions to develop a platform specific chipset chipset for Intel’s next-generation interconnect technology called QuickPath Interconnect (QPI). QPI is part of the Core i7 design.

On Thursday Nvidia mentioned that it will license its Scalable Link Interface (SLI sli ) technology for the Intel Core i7 processor. The SLI technology will work along with Intel’s X58 chipset which is due to ship in the fourth quarter.

SLI allows system to be configured with more than one Nvidia graphics solution. For example, end users could build systems with two, three or even four Nvidia graphics boards.

Essentially Nvidia is offering “native” licensing of its Scalable Link Interface to partners and system builders. Native licensing does not require the specific use of the Nvidia nForce nForce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 200 bridging chip, thus increasing the graphics support range on Core i7 based systems.

As of current, Nvidia has only ever offered nForce 200. nForce 200 is basically specialized PCI Express pci express bridge chip that is the under workings of SLI. This has been the only solution. Nvidia plans to continue its nForce 200 offering going forward. The main distinction between native and nForce 200 is that native SLI allows for more common configurations.

It is rumored that Nvidia was losing ground to AMD-ATI by not offering a solution that appeals more to system builders and end users.

Nvidia also plans to announce a new high-performance motherboard based integrated GPU in the coming weeks. This will be a follow-on to its GeForce 8200 mobile GPU solution. The upcoming mobile GPU will be complete with the Intel G45 integrated graphics chipset."

All the more reason to wait for next generation hardware.

8800gt is still the king of the budget hill, so no need to worry about nvidia going the way of the 3dfx company as long as its cards aren't stupidly uber expensive.

the ati hd 4800 series look like new affordable contenders to the gf9 line.

and finally laptops arent for psycho gaming.
who wants a laptop that cant be overclocked like a desktop and uber cooled?
