Icon4 Lebanon to get higher-speed internet - 20th February 2009

Source: The Daily Star - Business Articles - Lebanon to get higher-speed internet

Thursday, February 19, 2009

"BEIRUT: Internet speed in Lebanon is expected to become 20 times faster in two months once the country gets linked to a cable stretching from Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria, a statement by the Telecommunication Ministry said on Wednesday. Telecom Minister Jebran Bassil signed a preliminary agreement in Barcelona with Kuwait-based Mada Communication company and Saudi STC company. The agreement stipulates that the companies will install the internet cable to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Bassil hopes that the project will be accomplished in two months, stressing that the Lebanese government will not spend any money from its pocket on this cable. The statement said that the rates offered in Lebanon will be very competitive. Lebanon introduced three years the fast internet system DSL three years ago. But critics say that the DSL connection is sill far lower then other internet in the region. - The Daily Star"

So guys.. what do you think?

me 2...... just hope by 20TIMES faster they mean also more Quota... cuz it'd be stupid to have(JUST AN EXAMPLE:512kbpsX20)= a 10mbps connection with a 20GB limit

if they can achieve to make a descent Stable 512kbps unlimited DSL connection for a reasonable price i'd buy it.... but i guess we'll just have to wait and see if ...after all this years since the DSL service began... will this VERY needed upgrade occur

This improvement will take our connection to the next level. But is there any other official info posted over the net from a source other than daily star?

I've heard daily star closed their offices and I'm wondering how they are still posting articles?

Daily Star had a financial problem with a bank (took too much loans or smthg) so the bank sued them.

The court decided to close their offices, but after some negotiations the court allowed daily star to resume their work, but the case is still on :)

Some things can only be found in Lebanon, like this stupid Quota thing, and the 70 dollars that you have to pay to the bank every year to renew your credit card. maskhara haydeh

They didn't specify exactly the type of connection that will be used to connect people but judging by STC's services i think it will be through DSL.
