One more vote against TOSHIBA.

My sister has a VAIO. The hardisk crashed after 2 months! I don't know if she was just unlucky but this is what happened. She fixed it and it is now working fine though.

thinkpads are the most reliable for business applications and you can have them with any specs
HP's are nice from the outside, and usually carry the latest tech for affordable prices but they overheat and their batteries suck, stay away if you are looking for mobility and extended life.
dells are more or less similar to the thinkpad, also workhorses, with nice designs, you might find a studio 15 is a very capable laptop

i second that lenovo-thinkpad are the best, one thing very irritating for me
the fn key is instead of the ctrl key in the left, and i couldn't get used to it!!
are there thinkpads with normal keyboards??

back to the question lenovos are the best but they're a little expensive,
and avoid low-cost laptops even if they are HP, toshiba or DELL,
there are series that are bad, not the whole brand.

and for sure avoid vista, buy a laptop without OS installed (you could save ~100$ price from the windows license) and install XP

Toshiba Satellite L305-S5877 That's the best laptop I've seen so far!

I would recommend Toshiba and HP, and always stay away from Acer, you have a 9/10 chance that it would suck!

I don't like Vaio at all, I know 5 persons who got one and it quickly broke!

I think I have to agree with "nuclearcat", that you can't judge a whole brand base on your experience using a certain model.

A laptop is a combination of compatible parts targeted for specific users.

So you have to put 3 things in mind when looking for a laptop:
1- use: u're buying it for office work, graphics, high computational calculations, server, etc... if you're looking for performance, try to find a laptop with lots of RAM & with 7400 rpm hard disks.
2- compatibility: some OS operate better than others with certain parts & chipsets. So if you buy a laptop with XP installed, you should know that probably it will work better with XP than Vista (OS vs. Drivers vs. Compatibility).
3- price: if you're looking for a super computer for $500... forget it.
