DELL and ASUS ktir tamem as for me i am satisfied with HP , khsouseh when i compare with my friends who have toshiba and acer
however you should always compare prices ..... because when you have a valid 3 years warranty like i do , there's nothing else to worry about
the thing is that in leb dell and asus are rare , or it's just me who couldn't find any store to check the prices and specs

i have an HP , it's by far the cheapest one i found for the same specs and it's working great , however the price was not my first priority , HP offers great customer service (on the internet) + i found in laptop forums that HP users are more than other brands users so whenever i have something to ask i just ask and always find the answers i need :)
for me it was the help and customer support the first thing that made me choose HP , especially since it was my first laptop ........

anyway , here's this link www.notebookreview.com , that's how i made my mind

MSI GT725 , yes trust me on this one. Specifications concerned, with that price, youll never find a (dell, toshiba, hp, vaio) priced similarly. It just beats them all around; great features, great price, great quality and decent look. The only hurdle you must overcome is the decision to navigate away from the toshiba/hp/vaio list we lebanese seem to favor and actually consider getting an MSI laptop.

The main thing to consider when buying a laptop is the long term maintenance and support,

Try to buy laptops that has a well known dealer, and that you know that has has good support & fast response time.

At the end all the laptops are made of the same materials they have similar CPUs made by intel , similar RAMs made by Kingston or some well known providers.

U can buy anything,
It doesnt matter if it is vista or not you can install XP as much as drivers exist

I dont think Sony and IBM are a choice, high price

and IBM downgrade to XP isnt successful

You need to define what the laptop will be used for.... I bought a Toshiba Protege in 2002 and it still runs flawlessly!!! I got another Sony Vaio in 2006 and I changed the battery twice on it already... it heats up (it's a Duo not Duo2)...Lenovos are good but depends on the model, I've read reviews recently that their screens suck.... I just bought another laptop last week and I got a Toshiba again. For the price, I think I got a very good deal

One thing everybody is missing, you should avoid NOT BRAND, you should avoid specific models. And "works for me" it is not a feedback, just some people not very choosy.

1 rule)Avoid extensive (and expensive) capabilities. Too small, too powerful, too ... - means very high possibility, that hardware working on the edge. If you need a "workhourse", find a "middle" Mhz Core 2 Duo, or if u cannot afford - Celeron. Avoid P4 - they are too hot for laptop, and consuming too much power.

2 rule) Avoid Nvidia/ATI video, they are still far for gaming, and you need laptop for work, so Intel onboard will work pretty well (less watts going as heat and less wats draws from battery).

3 rule)Find laptop with 1-2G ram at least, better even more. Laptops usually have slow HDD's, so more RAM - more satisfying "desktop performance" you have.

4)Thermal design matter. Try to find laptop you gonna buy on stand. If in idle state or average load fan is spinning with noise - most probably it has problems with proper cooling.

And few more small points.

Check what is wireless chipset. Most trouble-free - Intel Wireless.
After you find out, what model you want (check EXACTLY which one), go home/work, and check in internet feedbacks about it.

Btw even Acers can work very well. I had Acer, if you use it carefully - it will last 2-3 year without problem. Only one problem - their batteries degradating fast.
Toshiba i had for 3 years - one time(after 6 month) power connector board failed, manufacturing defect. I had to fight with dealer who sold me it, because he dont want to take it as warranty repair. The lid was painted very bad way, easily scratchable. After 3 year LCD was busted.
Sony Vaio (very small one, i dont remember model, but it costs around $2k) - battery charger busted without any reason.
But that specific case of specific models.
