Default Help with windows internet - 19th January 2009

Hi Guys,

I hope somebody can help me with this.

I have a laptop with vista ultimate. recently the download became a very experience to me. It stalls!! After I get a part of the download it stalls and does nto move anymore. The download starts at 500 kb/s then move down and up then stalls. I tried every single trick I could find on the internet with people claiming the same problem to no avail. Is there somebody who could help me with this?

The following are some details of the system I have.

Vista ultimate.
Cable internet (comcast)
I use a belkin router ( I tried both direct connect to the modem and wirless through the router to no avail).

Things I tried.

Changed the MTU within a range between 1500 down to 1300.
Disabled the gobal autotuning (even set it up to high) to no avail.
updated every driver related to internet (even those unrelated).
removed the ipv6.

etc..,,

I am really frustrated and been working on it for few days now. Anybody can help?

simple question, with what browser are u downloading ?

and did u try out download accelerators such as IDM, FDM or Download Accelerator ?

routers shouldn't cause this nor should the tcp/ip packet settings.

it's either something wrong with ur download program, or something is wrong with ur internet connection.

check with ur isp provider if u ping his server and get lots of 'request timeouts'

request time-outs won't affect internet browsing but they will affect 'un-accelerated' normal downloads.

so basic things first, check ur own connection and if the issue is local to ur pc, try out different browsers and download accelerators.

restore ur tcp/ip packet settings to default setup.

if all fails, try connecting to the internet without ur router, perhaps it became defective.

I use iexplorer 7. I do not use any kind of accelerator and never did before having this problem. This problem started recently like a month ago. I checked with my isp and did so many things to no avail. I will try pinging to see if I have pakcet loss or timeouts and will restore the default tcp/ip settings then will get back to post the results here..

Thank you Red Phoenix for taking the time to reply.

plz try a quick test by downloading using FireFox or Opera as browsers.

also try out FDM *Free Download Manager* for ur downloads.

i don't know what is happening in ur case, but i would suspect timeouts from the internet connection.

to see if u are getting 'request timeouts' ping the gateway and/or dns ip of ur isp.

ur router should have these nbs in its configuration web panel if u dont know them.

also try pinging some internet servers, such as google.com or yahoo.com, see if u are getting timeouts.

for cable users everything usually times out at evening, so u better test ur connection when the network is not bottlenecked by too many users.

I did try firefox; Same problem as explorer. The problem occured all day and way into evening and night. I will try the download manager and other things you suggested when I get home.

I suspect a conflict with a 3rd party program or add-in. Could you post a log of HijackThis? It would be helpful.
|MG| HijackThis 1.99.1

Also, I guess it should be done already, but sweep your PC for spywares, dialers, etc.

Thank you. I will post the hijack log later on at night. What you suggested is very plausible.

yes I did scan for spywares, viruses etc.. with an updated norton and windows defender. It came back clean.

I am not sure if this will be helpful... I read a couple of days ago about a worm (Conficker) that infected computers a while ago and it activated itself later on, and it is considered to be a serious threat since it infected millions already. This *might* be the cause of your problem... update your vista for the latest patches and try running online scans from trend micro or others, maybe norton is affected somehow...
