Default Google Street View - 5th August 2008

I was just watching CNN and they announce that Google has launched a new feature called Street View. So I checked it out and I was stunned! I could see any house in Australia, Europe, America and Japan (maybe others) from a street point of view. It is really amazing, I could see my house like I would if I were driving in front of it, I could see mail in my mailbox, cars parked outside the house along with "still" people on the sidewalks and in cars... some really impressive stuff!

Google Maps make sure you click on Street View on top right corner

Seriously, technically how the hell did they do it? Manually taking pictures of every address in the world is obviously out of the question. So how did they do it????

Presenting the Google Street View car:

Now guess where is that:

Answer:
This is the "Google Street View car actually driving around and taking pictures inside a Microsoft campus. The GooCar—shown here photographed by Microsoftees—wasn't just covering regular roads, they were going in-between buildings and getting as many angles as they could of the campus. That's ballsy. What's even funnier, says Don, is that the Google guys were driving around the team that does Windows Live Maps, like nothing was wrong, when other Microsoft guys were laughing and yelling at them. Much nerd hilarity ensued."

Exactly... if you look at all the images from a single street in some timely fashion, you can see that they were taken manually from a car driving down the street... you can actually observe the pedestrians and cars slightly changing from one image to another... you can think of each image as a frame of motion... you could also see that some streets were shot at night while most others were shot during the day

How much time did it take to take shots of all streets in Australia, US, Japan... wherever that service is !!!

What an investment !!!

They released it a couple of months ago, mainly for US cities, and the Tour de France path. But I don't like the idea.
