Well it will take sometime to get started since we are still in the learning phase. But as you stated, modding is a good way to start although it will require some programming knowledge to make things work as intended.
As for game type and coming from a moderate background of RTS modding then maybe we can go with the RTS or FPS genre. If you have anything in mind please do state.
As for communication i think it is much easier now with the presence of services such as twitter and the likes.
