You can always acquiant yourself with some skills being in 2d/3d modeling, Level Creation, story writing...etc

imo they all add up to form a successful game. But yes the idea and how the game plays are critical aspects. There is this 10-minute magic number I keep on hearing devs talk about. It is simply the fact that when you demo your game and during the first 10 minutes you don't make people drop their jaws then you are missing something.

There is no doubt that the
first game that will be created will be in 2d. 3d design is another world of its own. I'm looking into the action genre like soldat, mario or anything that falls into that category. I simplified version of Might and Magic/ Civilization also can fit in.

At first you have to practice your skills and get used to games that you know. Clearly you won't be making magic on your first shot.
I also found an amazing series of webcasts from Microsoft. Guess what they are given by an instructor from Digipen !
