ofcourse.

big engines/sdks end up being used by AAA developers with rich publishers behind them.

sad little engines/sdks are the only thing that indie teams can afford.

Cryengine, Unreal Engine, Source Engine, IDtech, Lithtech Jupiter EX, all of these are very powerful, very famous and very expensive engines.

Ogre3d (only a renderer), Irrlicht, Panda, Crystal Space are examples of free, kinda useless at times engines.

Torque3D, Unity, C4, Visual3D.net.. are affordable kinda useful engines for indie developers.

dont forget, there is a very strong modding community also that creates free mods for famous games/engines.

Haha I guess you and my brother share the same dream. He will be leaving this year to Concordia which recently started provided a game development major.
What's your progress so far? Have you started with your major?

Check out the list of "Game Engines" also check out this link for some cool articles regarding game development.

@orange infection:
Just check out what C++ can do in the links above. The C++ you learn in university might give you the impression that it is only a black and white console.

@Red Phoenix & Frisbeetarian: I'd love to have a chat with you guys.
