Default Game Development anyone? - 8th April 2009

Hello all,

I'm curious if someone here has a career related to game development or is studying to become one?

It might not mean anything to some people but for others its a dream job. It is quite tough to get into since you need to be proficient in programming languages such as C++ which most current games are coded in. My friend was trying to get into USEK for the Digipen major when all of a sudden he realised that they canceled it 3 years ago. What a way to go :( !

ya it's cool.

game developement draws in ppl from many fields not just coders such as

Engine core coders
Engine scripters
Tools programmers
Shader programers
AI coders
Network coders
Sound coders
Physics coders
Cross platform porting coders
3D animators
3D modellers
3D texture/shader artists
Scene lighting, setup and render experts
Gameplay Designers
Level Designers
2D concept artists and sketchers
Soundfx designers
Team Leads
Managers
Accountants
Marketting Crew
Publishers
Actors
IT technicians

and the tools of the trade vary programing-wise from

creating their own engine
buying a license for an engine
buying a license for a middleware sdk
..
with AAA tools such as
UT Engine, Source Engine, CryEngine, Gamebryo SDK, Ogre3d(free)...

teams can vary from 30 to 300 and budgets from 100k to 10 million.

indipendent teams, or indie, will have access to less funding and hence will have less tools and less than average engines/tools to use since they will not have access to a publisher unless they can convice it that they are developing a potential AAA title.

game developement starts with a concept design, passes through prototyping, if approved moves on to implementation and hopefully publishing if business interests allow.

it's literally a multi million dollar industry with events such as the GDC and E3 to showcase new games and technologies used.

C++,C,Lua,C#,custom engine scripts, directx, opengl, win32api, .net, XNA, cgfx, glsl, SDL, .... are all languages that can be used depending on the project and the team.

3dsmax, maya, photoshop, premiere, zbrush,... all also some of the tools that artists can use.

in short it's a long cool endeavor, just like the movie industry :)

Oh me, I've made a casion game, with dice rolling, on a guessing number! It was so fun, I tell you!

Ok, that was a bit of sarcasm, but I had that as a homework for my programming course!

Anyways, get the basic, outcome the sophisticated!

Wow Red Phoenix you just posted as if you belong to a game development team :).
Have you ever tried getting into the gaming industry ?
Yes you are right, GDC and E3 are the top places where devs showcase their games.
So right about the tools/languages they use. I have done some reading regarding most of them but still there is a lot of cool stuff to learn.

IO, the trick is that it's not only textbook C++ here that will get u a game running, but C++ with game APIs and SDKs and full Engines..

that's the trick right there :D

Im studying to later work in the gaming industry. The plan goes like this:

-Finish Computer Science Degree
-Off to Canada for Game Development Degree.
-Finish that, take training sessions at Ubisoft.
-Finish that, hopefully will work at Blizzard
