Another info i got, from this forum.
Beirut districts, plain and simple comparative study
Rass Beirut (30,000 voters)
Achrafieh (52,000 voters)

As i know Rass Beirut include Hamra. ANyway, let's count 30k people. Even each one want subscribe.
"FTTH for 40,000 Internet subscribers in Hamra"
HA-HA-HA-HA. I guess cats, dogs, and cockroaches will subscribe to Ogero too.

Danny Z is absolutely right. Bassil's statement is completely fictional.

Without an international, core, and metro network, FTTH is useless. It's like drinking out of a funnel the other way around: big opening, small pipe.

Money would be better spent upgrading intl capacity and installing fiber to the cabinet (ie upgrading the core and metro) as current copper wiring with closer multiplexers can push the *existing* cables to 40+Mbps.

Very true. Whenever I see Osama Habib in the byline I make sure to double check the article...

[...] As a consultant in telecom, I read his articles on IT in the daily star and I notice he confuses some of the basic engineering concepts...

as for Minister Bassil: again as a consultant in the field, I'm telling you that according to what has been talked about in the media, the plan is totally unfeasable and approaches Lebanon's bandwidth scarcity problems in reverse.

If the Minister wants to do something to address bandwidth issues (which I'm sure he has all intention of doing) he would do better to auction off National Broadband licenses which would integrate the Intl, core, and metro networks, allow them to engage in active network sharing in order to be able to service other kinds of IP-traffic (e.g. mobile, 3g, etc.), and provide a wider variety of backhaul options for access providers in the country (e.g. the many ISPs in the country)...

this is actually the plan of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Lebanon. You can take a look at their liberalization roadmap here:

TRA - Telecommunications Regulatory Authority

It's quite good.

cheers

sasha

I thought we said let's keep politics away... Anyway I just do not want you to answer the question anymore because it is clear you can't for a simple reason that Bassil has plans for the moments and can do nothing before elections.

give the guy a break ... previous ministers were playing with their balls all day long, this one is trying to learn what's best, maybe the next minister will continue the road, maybe after all lebanese mentality will change to accept other one's thoughts.

i challenge anyone on this forum to tell that gebran is not at least trying to make a change, and this is what we all should be interested for ...

@nuclearcat: i know that you are very talented and knowledgeable about communications and no one can argue, anyway we can see that from the sudden rise of VISP after the horrors that happened to it, so we here at orange forums demand you to go and have a meeting with gebran and talk to him about the steps that he's about to take and you will see for yourself how dedicated this person is and how much truth there is to his heart, we have faith that you could convince him to take the proper actions in our country, or maybe debate about it. there are plenty of people with good FPM connections in this forum that could make this meeting take place.

Look to Ukraine, country where i was living before. There is Orange party ruling the country. Previous government also was sitting and playing with balls, but country was GROWING. Then party came, who took also Orange color and promissed changes. Few years passed. The thing they tried also was unprofessional, and everybody told they "need to learn", "at least they are trying something", "they are trying to do good for country".
Well at the end orangists ruin everything. I can tell in details what happened, but in short it is same as Gebran Bassil doing now. Now Ukraine is bankrupt and economics is dead. All people understood, that better to have people who play with balls, but at least they let people WORK without shaking all country by unprofessional decisions.

So the thing i am telling is already my sad experience and it is future that waiting Lebanon, if people "who dont play with balls" will do action here.

Sorry Orange guys, mostly my friends was people with FPM. They was telling, Orange here is different and etc. When **** happened i asked, can we do something? You was all talking Aoun and all Orange politicians good people and close to citizens, we can talk and solve everything, and you all have connections with them. Well, it is time now to talk. Many christians, mostly FPM areas sitting without internet, people loosing money, and loosing business. I tried ALL possible connections, my and not mine. Useless. It is worse than Marwan Hamadeh. Now i am telling, that please while you are with me, dont talk how good is FPM.
I still didn't lost hope that there is way to talk with someone from FPM, to make things better here. But i start also recovering my own business, outside Lebanon. All what i see happening now, just where i'm experienced - it is complete disaster and death of country.

And last thing. Country need solutions NOW. People need to work NOW, and they want to eat DAILY. So there is no time till Geban Bassil learn how to work. Let him hire _INDEPENDENT_ _PROFESSIONAL_ consultants from outside at least and listen to them.

ok i knew that you were gonna say that so imagine this: you hire a guy for IT department ... he did nothing all day long ... you fire him and hire another one, new guy did everything wrong but was very excited about work all day long ...

are you telling me that it's better to fire the new guy and hire back the old guy who did nothing ? or maybe try to train the new guy by professionals and he could be a big asset in the future ?

moral of the story, you are a professional in the field, use it to help us instead of bitch all day about how gebran is stupid and doing it wrong,he should be castrated, he shouldn't be breastfed, he should sit on a pole ... i can assure you that this will only lead for the better.

now let's talk business : you told me you're ukrainian :P, am a 23 year old blond dude, great job, huge income, tall 185cm, computer and communication engineer, green eyes, stud ... you have anyone to introduce me to :P ? i know ukrainian girls are very beautiful, come on.
