Default Fiber optic in Beirut - 28th April 2009

Hey guys,
Just wanted to share with you this exciting news. It maybe still at the study level but nonetheless it is great.
I hope that Bassil stays with the next government as the Minister of Telecom. He has been doing some great jobs lately.

this would be awsome if this news is true. I had to do some research about this topic and, my God, download speeds can reach orders of Gigabytes per second!

You need a faster backbone and downloads are limited by your provider switches, fiber optic will definitely not go to your home.

"We are talking about a speed of 70 megabyte speed per second instead of the current two megabytes per second," Bassil said.

I dont see any 2megabytes/sec around .. (16mbps .!? )

It is obvious he doesnt know the difference between Bits and Bytes... I forgive him.. election season...

You need to check out who quoted Bassil. Being the Daily Star, I would think twice before accusing Bassil of ignorance.

Very interesting if he said anything like that. Even he mix megabits with megabytes, here is no 2 mbit/s. Even he can provide transport for 70 Mbps, it will be useful for some robbing TV company. And marketwise it is drop in the sea. This service useless in 2 areas, it have to be countrywide to be successfull and good for all Lebanese people.
IMHO FTTH is not what country need this days. Country in hunder of international bandwidth. Country in hunger of fiber capacity between cities, to provide decent service for cellulars and interconnection for ISP's. All that can DROP prices.
And minister doing FTTH for two areas, that will cost $15 millions. HA-HA-HA
70 Mbps (even Megabits) will cost with current Ogero prices 100000$/month. And they cannot provide it (they dont have money to pay for international capacity). Or maybe you want 70 Mbps with quota 1GB? :-P and each additional GB - ***** LL. Hehe!

Sorry Orange people, but seems your ministers pickpocketing money much faster than their precedessors. I'm very pissed off what happened with industry when FPM minister came to telecom. I hope that i am wrong.

During an interview with Shirley Murr a couple of weeks ago, Jebran was not able to recall the Ministry of Telecommunication's website. I am sure he is capable of mixing bits and bytes!

But this is very exiting news... we are really lacking behind other countries at the internet level, and businesses are only starting to use powerfull internet tools to increase their productivity and growth

I guess the daily star quoted it wrong or something.
Today our maximum capacity is 2 megabits per second(DSL), the fiber optic service will be able to provide 70 megabits per second not megabytes.
this means we get a maximum of 8.75 megabytes per second download rate!

and please stop talkin like that about the minister, " le2o hadan ya3mol the progress that he did w ba3tikon li badkoun ye!!! "
