Default Browser Wars - 8th July 2008

The term "browser wars" is the name given to the competition for dominance in the web browser marketplace. The term is most commonly used to refer to two specific periods: the particularly intense struggle between Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator during the late 1990s, and the competition between the browser-marketshare leader Internet Explorer and Firefox from 2004 onward.

The first widely used web browser was NCSA Mosaic published in early 1993 (Mosaic WAS NOT the first WWW browser, Mosaic was the WWW browser that got the whole WWW revolution started. The first WWW browser I recall using was created at CERN). The Mosaic programming team then developed the first commercial web browser called Netscape Navigator, later renamed Communicator, then renamed back to just Netscape. The Netscape browser led in user share until Microsoft Internet Explorer took the lead in 1999 due to its distribution advantage. A free open source software version of Netscape was then developed called Mozilla, which was the internal name for the old Netscape browser, and released in 2002. Mozilla has since gained in market share, particularly on non-Windows platforms, largely due to its open source foundation, and in 2004 was released in the quickly popular FireFox version.

What browser do you use? and why?

Great thread, thanx Osiris.

I use Internet explorer ever since my baby steps on PC. I heard many times that there are many better ones but never dared to change. So I am waiting anxiously too for feedbacks.

Try Firefox 3
Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client

Try it for a week, and I pretty sure that you would never dare to go back to Internet explorer

I use firefox on both windows and mac because I am a big fan of the zotero plug-in, but it is actually a pretty good browser.

Can you please explain why Firefox is better than Internet Explorer or other browsers?

Firefox is faster and has better interface.
You can add extensions and themes
Built-in spell-checker
Firefox 3 has download manager that can resume downloads
You can reopen accidentally closed tabs by clicking Ctrl = shift +T
Firefox use Incremental find
History has built-in search
With firefox 3.0 you can save your tabs when you Exit

And there is much more

GMAf, the best thing by far is the add-ons part. It's really as far as the imagination of developers out there goes. You have extensions for the craziest things you did not even consider to have in your browser. There are thousands of them, and it's quite easy to navigate to pick the most popular ones or search for ones you think you need.
