The feeling of metal is even more expressed through those subgenres, + It is not any other wanky music , It needs even more talent.
and no matter if you think the growling and shrieks etc are repulsive, they actually add to the music. one might need to give it a bit of time to swallow it at the beginning , though.
Anyway, I listen to Death/Black/Folk Metal in all of it's forms mainly.
Some other secondary stuff would be some classical stuff or classic heavy metal like Dio, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, etc | | | | | Registered Member

REGARDS - fellow metalhead | Definitely it's about taste, and I respect all the musicians you mentioned, they were the ones who got me into metal in the first place, but there are alot of gods in the other subgenres, actually Death/black/folk metal dominate the metal scene right now.
But trust me Death metal for instance is very complex , definitely more complex than the classic Heavy metal stuff. Definitely Black Sabbath are even the main influence of stoner doom metal ... and all the others you mentioned have had their influence on the metal scene and it's progress.
But The creativity in Death Metal for example is at its metal peak.
Forget the gore, blood, torture, and even antichristian lyrical themes or the guttural growls for a start and focus on the music.
You see, to me metal is all about the headbanging riffs and fast blast beats. It has an "aggressive" sound for sure, but it owns. The true essence of music is in those genres. | | | | | Registered Member

The true essence of music is in those genres. | I hear you: aggressive is one keyword in metal ... but I'd appreciate a lot better "TASTEFUL" aggressiveness, which is BTW, more feeling and less instinct...
But let me tell you what, playing the guitar made me understand in a way why growling is used in Death metal and co. instead of you know, singing : playing this kind of music, basically driven by the guitars, is one killer ride !! It's technically abusive, not musically, only technically : in a pure musical perspective most of its melodies are borrowed from melody pioneers Iron Maiden ... but the music is again, however, very tenting, you can't but, in a moment of a both rage and physical supremacy, play it ... this same music, cannot be sang to, you can only growl to it ... that I don't like !! that's why people I respect as much as the BS and co. are those who were able to take the music to the next level of aggressiveness while mainting a certain margin of expressive singing, singing that still holds the singer's feeling into it. (i'm talking Megadeth, Pantera, Manowar ... ) | | | | | Registered Member

| The fact that you you don't like it shows that it's just taste.
Because as you said it is kind of awkward to have extreme metal with pure clean vocals, maybe because that's how it is and everyone got used to it, but also the music has an "aggressive" touch in most metal genres to say the least and when it gets brutal , growling matches the music.
The growling is just a normal change towards the heavier and even brutal sound in the those extreme subgenres.
In Metal singing is not important, and you know that, it adds to the music ofcourse, though. The "emotions" if you want to put it that way, is from the music.
You can even have two bands that have similar style yet somewhat different vocal style.
You see hard rock and classic heavy stuff like Metallica's Nothing else matters or so are prolly good to hear, but they are not metal. Anyway, this discussion can be better discussed in the heavy metal thread | | | | | Registered Member
