Who knows what defines an era, what gives it a special flavour and makes it memorable. Back Then Beirut and Cairo were two artristic poles in the Arab world and each was competeing for supremacy with its share of great music and lovely one for the masses.

And if you thought that it's only now that people jump on the dance floor the minute they hear a sad song, think again. It's a tradition.
It has changed miraculously. Back in those happy Arabian/Phoenecian days, a dance to sad music didn't involve opening your mouth and ecstaticly showing off your bright teeth, all was expressed as should be. The body was an instrument playing the music of the soul touched by both music and word. Now it's more or less like a machine shaking happily to "kan ya makan". Gosh everything has changed....
ahhhhh now this is a thread. what beautiful art filled music, we lack so much of today. Some of my favorites from that time were Asmahan, Oum kolthoum, fairouz, shadia, and warda. I don't know if all my favorites are pre-1980's but ill post as many as i find.
