i know this sounds silly.. but for the sake of discussion...
General Lee fought for the freedom of Virginians to decide how to live..
Lee was an officer in the US army before the war started.. a graduate of West Point and at the beginning of the war, he had no slaves in his estate Arlington.
Lee was a brilliant general and was able to threaten Washington DC itself on 2 occasions and was able to keep the northern armies at check despite the discrepancy in weapons and numbers...
he didn't believe in the war, but believed in the virginians to decide whether they want to secede or not.
by the way, do u call it civil war ? or war of aggression of the north?
